I found this thread a couple of weeks ago over at that other place, and I spent a couple of days reading it. It had been closed for a long time, but I thought we could maybe re-open it here? It has been a long time since I'd laughed that much. Fandom can be a very scary and at the same time hilarious thing, I tell ya.
Anyway, I'll start off by introducing you to one of the scariest group of fans I've ever encountered: the Michael Jackson fans. Or "The Cult" as they're called by some. I could go on for hours and hours about these people. It's hard to even know where to begin. Let's just say that when you decide to quit your job and travel all across the country to stand outside the courtroom while your idol is on trial for child molestation ++, you have crossed a line. People in that cult threaten to kill themselves on a regular basis.
It's one thing to admire someone - a pop star, an author, a movie star, a model, an athlete. You read about them, look at photos, go see them in concerts / games / at the movies, read fan fiction etc. It's a whole other thing to worship someone so much that they can do no wrong. So much that you actually truly believe you know them and that they have to meet you and see that you're soulmates. So much that you quit your job, neglect your family and are unable of talking about anything other than this person. So much that you're willing to kill yourself.
Well, I'm hoping this thread can be as fun and interesting as the one I've been reading "over there". So come on people, share your thoughts, opinions, questions and experiences! Crazy is fun!

There is a certain possibility for that to happen, as it did at the old place. There people started to turn it into a discussion about crazy fan fiction, but since there already was a thread about fan fiction, the thread was closed. I don't mind discussing fan fiction in here, as long as it stays on topic and not become a place to recommend good stories. But that's of course totally up to the mods here.
I'll be following this thread since I'm fascinated with the scary world of fandom and I'll try to keep things on topic.
Thanks for letting us give it a try!

Courtney Love fans (of which I am a former) are some of the scariest I've encountered online and in person. Not only do they think she's breathtakingly gorgeous (even now), they are constantly making up excuses for her drug addled antics. I once had a conversation with one fan that was completely convinced that Courtney's current problems were the result of the 'administration trying to silence a strong, political force of nature'. Courtney Love, people. Courtney.Love. The sad thing is, most of these fans are old enough to know better.
Another group of fans that freak me out? Marilyn Manson fans. I have had numerous encounters with these beings in person and let me tell you, they take obsession to a whole new level. I've seen a lot of groupies in my day and Manson groupies are definitely the scariest and most pathetic. Thankfully Manson Mania has dropped off considerably over the years, but a dedicated group of mentally unstable fans still remain.
I have lots of other stories to tell, but I'll be back later.

Aren't the David Duchovny fans pretty rabid as well? And if you happen to express the fact that you don't like Tea Leoni, they slam you for "jellusness"?

Tori Amos fans (minus the ones at the old FT thread) are scary.
It's like the crazy, hardcore fans enjoy being victims and their pain. Then there's the obsession with faeries and I did mention, the vast amounts of pain?

Ditto on the David Duchovny fans, zivvie. I know someone who got quite a number of hate-mails just because she deigned to diss the wifey in an XF forum. And speaking of XF, I picked up this Creepy Letters thread on the other board. Yowza.

It surprises me to read that the Courtney Love fans are that crazy. Of course, there are crazies everywhere, but I didn't think she would have so many of them that it's actually something you notice. Is it because of the whole "did or didn't she kill Kurt" debacle? Pity? It isn't about the music?
I stumbled across a board dedicated to Michael Jackson the other day, and I was thinking about linking it here, but thought better of it. I want to protect you from the images forever burned into my brain. The board was dedicated to "The Sexy Michael Jackson" (hey, there's a sentence I never thought I would write), and it was threads where they discussed his bodyparts in detail, and also extremely disturbing fan fiction. Who wants to imagine the freak of all freaks masturbating? Or even worse, having sex? I respect people's right to do whatever turns them on as long as it doesn't hurt anybody, but this? Not so much.
I don't know why I submit myself to these things. I do it all of the time. I can't look away.
And, ranma, those cards were creepy. I'm so happy I'm not a celebrity. I would get incredibly paranoid.

One of the things that gets me is peoples inability, or unwillingness, to seperate an actor from the character they play.
I think this is far worse for TV actors who play one role for years. I've never read anyone say "That Anthony Hopkins is such a creepy guy, the way he kills people and eats their livers" but I've read lots of comments on the net (IMDBs boards for one) saying more or less the same thing. How they think "Actress" is such a bitch because of the way "She" behaves on a show, and that they can swear that she's so good that it MUST be her real character.

Aren't the David Duchovny fans pretty rabid as well? And if you happen to express the fact that you don't like Tea Leoni, they slam you for "jellusness"? I think that's the curse of anyone who doesn't like the SO of a "heartthrob" type. If you have anything even slightly critical to say or that deviates from the standard "they're so cute" and "she's so lucky," you're branded "jellus" and not a real fan. It makes it tough when the SO, you know, sucks and you just can't help but snark. But speaking of truly scary, I think Michael Jackson's gang pretty much wins the Creepy Fan sweepstakes hands down.

Is it because of the whole "did or didn't she kill Kurt" debacle? Pity? It isn't about the music? Oh lawdy, Courtney fans can sometimes get out of control. 10 years ago, Courtney made some, err, disparaging remarks on the internet about a male musician that she decided she hated. All hell broke loose and her fans took it upon themselves to make this guy's life hell. My god, the creepy stuff he received in the mail! Girls would stalk him, hang outside his house, call him on the phone, send him dead animals in the mail - and they always made sure he knew they were doing it "for Courtney". The guy had to get bodyguards 24/7, for christ's sake. It was sad. Over the past couple of years her fanbase has dwindled down to a small, but fierce group. Not all of her fans are psycho, but it seems like a fairly large amount of them are a bit on the looney side. I won't even get into the freaks that think she killed Kurt. They are a whole other beast. And a scary beast, at that.
