Why did Paul have his video on? What was he recording?
And did Alex mean to kill Paul or was he collateral damage?
I’m glad he’s going down. I don’t understand some of the reports I’ve heard talking about how this is so strange because the Murdaughs were a respected family of lawyers.
Have they never read a book or seen a TV show or driven through a small town?
"The first generation makes the money, the second generation spends it, and the third generation blows it."
The Murdaughs might be more like a five or seven generation family, where the most recent one is comprised of utter degenerates.

I knew he was screwed when the jury came back after only 3 hours. Local reaction, per my Hampton relatives, has ranged from, “ Good. He’s guilty as sin,” to “Errr might have not have done it but I’m not losing sleep over him going to prison.” A train wreck made them and a boat crash ended them.
On another note I find it hilarious all the news orgs in the world have been trapped in Walterboro, SC for 6 weeks. There’s nothing there. Not even a decent bar. This has probably been a long 6 weeks for them.

I don’t understand some of the reports I’ve heard talking about how this is so strange because the Murdaughs were a respected family of lawyers. Have they never read a book or seen a TV show or driven through a small town? "The first generation makes the money, the second generation spends it, and the third generation blows it." The Murdaughs might be more like a five or seven generation family, where the most recent one is comprised of utter degenerates. Paul's friend, Rogan, was boarding his dog at the Murdaugh kennel and asked Paul to send a Snapchat video of the dog's tail because Rogan was worried about it. However, the connection was spotty and Paul didn't send it, so it was still on the phone. At first Alex denied it was him when confronted by the police. However, almost a dozen witnesses during the trial confirmed that it was indeed Alex's voice which he finally admitted when on the stand. I do think he meant to kill both Maggie and Paul especially because he specifically asked them both to come to Moselle. There is a rumor Alex's dad told him to 'take care of Paul' after the boat accident. Obviously, it's not verified, however, Alex and his dad were very concerned about the Murdaugh legacy, and the boat crash threatened that. There was a deposition during the boat litigation that a security guard at the hospital heard Alex on the phone telling Maggie that "don't worry, she's gone" the night of the boat crash. The Murdaughs essentially had control as a solicitor (a/k/a district attorney) for about 80 years. That's a long time. What's crazy is that the solicitor in South Carolina can also privately practice law as well. The first Murdaugh solicitor was Randolph Murdaugh Sr. who was killed in a train 'accident'. The train conductor said that Randolph Murdaugh waved at the him from his car, then drove onto the train tracks and stopped. The family sued and won against the railroad, and there was a lot of speculation that it was a suicide or he was drunk. Regardless, the Murdaughs family wealth started with the train accident and then the Murdaugh essentially built their firm by winning millions and millions from suing railroads over 4 dozen times throughout the years. The forensic psychologist on the Hidden True Crime channel talks about the shame of the Murdaugh's and how it haunted the family. It's truly very interesting and does give an idea what potentially was going on with Alex and how he could commit these murders. Yes, I have been down the Murdaugh rabbit hole for far too long, but find it scary to think that without the video he would have gotten away with it.

Thank you for the explanation, redangel! Dang, so Grandpa ordered Paul's death to preserve the family honor? What a legacy.
I'm trying to get my head around my PaPa telling my dad to kill me and...yeah. We don't seem to share the Murdaugh family values.

I feel bad for Buster. He may be an entitled brat, but his mom/brother are dead and his father is convicted of killing them. That's a lot. It's been a long-standing rumor that Buster had something to do with the death of Stephen Smith, his high school friend. It was alleged that the two boys were more than just platonic friends when suddenly Stephen was found dead in the middle of the road from trauma not consistent with being hit by a car. That investigation has been re-opened following "additional discovery" in the Alex Murdaugh case. So there are five dead bodies attached to this family - Stephen, Mallory, Gloria the housekeeper and the Maggie/Paul dual homicide. Unreal.

So there are five dead bodies attached to this family - Stephen, Mallory, Gloria the housekeeper and the Maggie/Paul dual homicide. Unreal. Oh I know, I just felt sympathy for Buster in the moment while watching the verdict and sentencing. I was just trying to imagine how it feels to essentially have no immediate family and your father being responsible for it. I mean, I know how I would feel (satisfied with justice for my family, but sadness/anger towards the family member responsible that I loved). I'm definitely not losing any sleep for Buster because I happen to think that Buster is a mini Alex which is a scary thought. His girlfriend better watch her back. Her family should gently encourage her to re-think if she really wants to be carrying and supporting a law school cheater reject and be associated with his family. Apparently Alex's family is still 100% convinced of his innocence. I don't get it. Are they too proud to recognize Alex is a monster? Is it because of the 'Murdaugh legacy'? Why is it so hard to acknowledge that he murdered his son/wife? People online, and even my sister, believe that being a liar doesn't make him a murderer. Sadly, it's not unheard of for a father to murder his family, and the cases that pop in my mind are Chris Watts, Michael Haights and Josh Powell. One wonders if Buster was at Moselle would he even be alive right now. I listen to many Murdaugh podcasts and one host (from SC I think) said there isn't evidence for Stephen's death related to Buster, and even that the police opened the investigation for the mother. I hope they are wrong and that there will be justice for Stephen, as well as Gloria. I'm not sure how it can be achieved for Mallory, even with the settlements, because Paul absolutely should have gone to jail. Edited to add a video regarding potential suspects into the death Stephen Smith from a channel that has had some content that I haven't always seen elsewhere. This link provides audio to others interviewed by police about Stephen's death. Some videos are before Alex was arrested for the murders.

Alex's family believes he's innocent? Does this include the family members at the law firm that he cheated out of $8.8M and the cousin who is now going to jail for helping him stage the attack on himself?

My mom kept asking me if I was following the trial and I thought it was just a run of the mill murder trial. Then I read a timeline of all the dirty dealings that People had put out and my jaw was on the floor the whole time. If this was a movie, people would criticize it as unrealistic.
The Netflix doc is good and really paints both Paul and Maggie in an unflattering light - especially Paul who seemed like a psycho. They absolutely did not deserve to die but I can't help but roll my eyes when people try to paint them as innocent and loving people. Every member of this family has their name linked to a murder!

I thought it was telling in the Netflix documentary that Morgan immediately thought Alex killed them after hearing about the murders. All 6 “kids” on the boat made made disaster our choices that night. 4 of them have to live with those choices for the rest of their lives. I hope they have 4 have damn good therapists. The Hakeem Pinckney part of Murdaugh’s thieving is still the most disturbing to me.

My question: where is the money? There aren't enough drugs in the world to spend all that money on for one guy. I wouldn't be surprised if he does have a pill problem but not that much of a pill problem.
