Refresh my memory: what did he start doing on set after he had his conversion? All I remember is that he got the actress who played his girlfriend kicked off the show because she'd posed in Playboy. I may have the details wrong.

That's right -- he had the woman who played his girlfriend fired because she had posed in Playboy. He also started refusing to act out certain scripts, and some storylines had to be shelved because of him. Basically everyone hated Kirk by the end. Tracy Gold was dealing with an eating disorder and Alan Thicke more of less openly hated Kirk's guts. It was a healthy, Christian set.

I remember reading that he demanded script rewrites because "Mike wouldn't do something like that" referring to inferences that Mike had maybe had sex.
I don't think Julie McCullough even played his romantic interest. She had just appeared nude in Playboy.

IIRC, the whole Cameron family got into religion when Kirk was a teen and Candace was a pre-teen. It took several years or so for Candace to get into it hardcore, but Kirk took to it right away. I didn't think it was Ray Comfort who got the family into it - I think Ray has always been primarily a friend of Kirk's?
I remember some of the stuff Kirk objected to on Growing Pains wasn't even sexual, it was stuff like Mike not sounding respectful to his parents. It was like, "Dude, are you familiar with the character of Mike Seaver at all?"

It was like, "Dude, are you familiar with the character of Mike Seaver at all?" I was just about to ask how Candace got into it if it was related to a trauma in Kirk's life only. Sounds like a family thing that got taken to a nuclear level. And yes, "respectful" and "Mike Seaver" are not two things that ever went together. Give up the role if you suddenly object to playing it as it was always written. She was the babysitter to the super annoying late addition kid and eventually became his girlfriend, IIRC. Why I remember that is beyond me and honestly, why I even watched this show is beyond me. I'm pretty sure I hated it even then. See also: Perfect Strangers, Full House, Small Wonder, Family Matters, and Saved By the Bell. 80s tv had a strange hold on me, apparently.

What?? No way! Small Wonder was the shit. Not to mention that she forgot Alf, Step by Step, My Two Dads, Just the 10 of Us, Punky Brewster and My Sister Sam.

I'm just waiting for some sort of scandal to erupt with this dude. You know it's coming. He's zealous, but he's also profoundly stupid. Something has to happen with money or a sex scandal at some point. He'll probably be caught with a dead girl or a live boy.

Ha, I never watched Alf or My Sister Sam and genuinely liked (at the time, not sure how it holds up) Punky Brewster to the point of having a Punky Brewster beach towel , but yes, Step by Step and Just the 10 of Us do qualify in the list of shows I hate-watched before I ever knew hate-watching was a thing!

Speaking of Candace, had she been living a good Christian life she would not have gotten an eating disorder, but fortunately Ray Comfort cured her bulimia. Eonline
