So here's a question, and apologies for my ignorance. What exactly are wedding banns? I've heard of them for a long time. Why are they called banns? Why were they announced there? Aren't they getting married in Italy? Does this mean there will be some sort of ceremony in London?

Aren't they getting married in Italy? Does this mean there will be some sort of ceremony in London? It is basically an announcement of an intended marriage that allows time for a response with any legitimate reason why a couple should not get married. I don't think you need them if you are not getting married in the UK. I think it is probably easier for them to do the civil ceremony in London, than jump through all the hoops in Italy. Though when you have George's type of money, those "hoops"can usually be jumped by his legal team.

When we get married here (Ontario) we have the option of getting a licence in advance, which requires the officiant to make the "does anyone have any objections to this marriage?" statement during the ceremony, or we can have the church publish banns in the bulletin, which gives objectors advance notice to do their thing. The couple signs papers during the ceremony, which would be the licence.
I remember U.S. TV shows and movies making a fuss about getting a blood test before marriage - is this still required? And why?
I still think Clooney is a silver fox. So he's pretentious, big deal. Half of Hollywood is. However, I see that his middle name is Timothy. Ugh. (Apologies to any Timothy's out there, but I find it to be a milquetoast name)

I don't think blood tests are still required in most states. It was a public health issue - in order to prevent the spread of STDs by people who were unaware that they were infected. When I was a kid, I remember a couple on a NYC subway train discussing their blood tests but it's not required anymore so I'm not sure exactly when they changed it

(Apologies to any Timothy's out there, but I find it to be a milquetoast name) Yeah, Timothy is a type of grass that rabbits eat, so it's one of the go-to names for fictional bunny rabbits. When I was really little, I named one of my plush toys Timothy after a rabbit in some picture books. (Hey, how come we consider Timothy a boy's name but Dorothy a girl's name?) For me, the dealbreaker that keeps me from genuinely crushing on George Clooney is the tradition of stupid pranks with his old friends.

The definite sign of a douche is a prankster. I always think it is a sign of passive-aggressive hostility.

I remember U.S. TV shows and movies making a fuss about getting a blood test before marriage - is this still required? And why? To my knowledge, no US state requires a blood test anymore. I don't know when it was overturned but I'm pretty sure it was gone by the 1970s or so. I think it was only testing for syphilis, since that can be passed to children at birth, and not all states did it. Maryland was one of those states, as mentioned in the Manchurian Candidate, Auntie Mame and elsewhere. I can't paste a link but Straight Dope has a good article on it. I also hate pranks.

I also thought one of the reasons for the blood test was to make sure bride and groom weren't related. Could be wrong though.
As much as I love George, I'm not a fan of the pranks either. Amal doesn't seem like a person who would put up with that behavior. Maybe she'll stop that.

I'm surprised they got a license, I really would've put money on the marriage not happening.
