He is generally so hyperaware of his image that his every moment in public, direct or indirect, is carefully controlled and the facade doesn't slip. However, the times when it does slip, it is perhaps made especially ugly because of how jarring it is. I can't remember the circumstances but years ago I think a tabloid show (?) caught him on camera and it was a very unpleasant, and usually unseen, side of him. Now, I give any celebrity leeway - everyone has their moments but most people don't have to worry about them being caught on camera or being preserved for eternity. But with George, when that unpleasant "edge" rears its head, I get a sneaking suspicion that he really could be a pain in the ass to live with. I think he's the type that needs to get that extra swing in even after he's "won".

George is so smug and self-righteous that even when he's right I can't help but roll my eyes at him.

I think the initial response to The Mail story was fine but he just can't quit while he's ahead.
I'm also thinking of the recent articles of him having the spat in Vegas with Steve Wynn? And it was a constant tit for tat with each trying to one up the other - but he said! But then this happened! But I have better friends so there! Reeked of childishness.

I'm not sure if I'll face some degree of shame for saying this in the George Clooney thread, but I've been watching Ladies of London and this latest fiasco reminds of something Caroline said to Juliet about her approach to arguing.
Caroline told Juliet that even when she's right, she keeps going at it and at that point, she's actually lost the argument.
Mind you, I'm paraphrasing what she said to Juliet, but I think it also applies to George and his need to not let anything go, even when he's proven himself to be in the right.

And he's also making sure the Daily Fail gets its name out there again and again.

I wonder if they also need to get a license in California. I'm really curious about how much information about the wedding will be made public. I hope there's at least one official photo that gives us a good look at the dress.

This summer has been nothing but war, pestilence and famine. I feel like we should have known back in April that Clooney getting engaged signaled that the end times were upon us.

Damn Clooney is such a self-obsessed bore.
But actually I think his biggest crimes are the movies he's directed. There's no vision. Just treacly, preachy bullshit. His best movie is still his first one, and I think it's successful because Charlie Kaufman wrote it.
His fiancee is gorgeous and I have no idea what she sees him. Sara Larson was too good for him! She at least seemed fun. George seems like he bloviates.
