I think it's because Hudson is their legal name, though I get what you mean. It's personal, so who knows. Maybe they didn't want to seem too obnoxious trading on Goldie's last name (though Kate was pimping the relationship right out of the gate, and was quick to acknowledge her family helping her get her foot in the door)... or taking Kurt Russell's last name. Maybe they like the last name, despite the rift with their Dad. Maybe their agents recommended they go with Hudson over Hahn... etc. I have friends with the same last name of their estranged dads. Often it's just that changing your name can be a pain in the ass.

Angelina Jolie notably chose not use her estranged father's last name either professionally or privately. (Didn't she legally change her name?) It seems as if Angelina had more of a relationship (off and on) with her father Jon Voight than Kate or Oliver Hudson did with Bill Hudson. It's interesting.
BTW, for Bill Hudson to say basically to Kate and Oliver, "Give me my name back" at this point in their lives isn't cool.

Whenever I hear crap like this from Hollywood types, I always assume there is some sort of monetary incentive.

Well, the thing is it's THEIR name, too. It doesn't belong to him because he had it first. If they feel like their name is part of their identity, then it's rightly theirs to keep. There are several people with whom I am not thrilled to share a surname, and I even thought once or twice about changing it because I didn't want to be associated with them. But then I realized no way -- it's MY name, too. It's been part of who I am my whole life.

Angie's parents gave them middle names that could be as last names so they could have careers independently of their father. That's the story anyway. JV was absent for large stretches of their lives, did not pay support regularly, then would swoop in and start bossing his ex wife around and complain about what a bad mom she was. He and Bill Hudson could trade notes.
Maybe keeping their last name was an unconscious sign that they did want a relationship with him. Now that they are well into adulthood and have established careers it doesn't make much sense for them to give up the name. Kate gave her son "Russell" as a middle name, in honor of Kurt.

Also, if it were a money thing, wouldn't it make more sense to go with Hahn or Russell? Hudson is no where near as famous as those two.

I posted this a couple pages back: As for keeping the Hudson name, well that's just a tricky thing altogether. I mean, they got into the business when they were adults, I believe (but may have done some random work as children which got them their SAG cards) and once that was established, changing their name could alter that brand. I think using Hawn or Russell would be sort of moot at this point. They're established under the Hudson name, however, I think changing it might let them try again to re-establish their lack-luster careers.

There would have to be a monumental increase in talent to get their careers moving in the positive direction.

I don't know what happened but it is clear all three of issues. Yes, all three. It's clear that Kate and Oliver (well mostly Oliver) are clearly holding on to a lot of pain, anger, and resentment. Otherwise he would not have felt the need to post what he did. He would have just did a nice Father's Day diddy for / to Kurt Russell.

Seriously. Why poke the bear? Just wish your stepdad Kurt a happy Father's Day and let it go. Or, as the bio father, just close the instagram page and go hug your remaining kids who still like you and get on with your life. Sounds like a lot of baggage for a group of adults to keep dragging around. Delete each other's social media pages from your google notifications, un-friend, un-follow and move on.
