Considering how many celebrities have survived much worse scandals with their reputations intact, if not improved, It still surprises me that she was burnt so badly. Sure, shoplifting is bad but no way is it worse than a DUI, or getting into an argument with cops ( hello Reese!). My guess is that she may have burnt a lot of bridges along the way and people in the industry did not want to help her.
She is so beautiful. Gwyneth wishes she had aged that well. No amount of organic food will make her skin look like Winona's.

I loved her in her 90s movies, but let's be honest, she doesn't have a lot of range as an actress. She was perfect as the misunderstood, earnest, angsty teenager and young adult but she never made a full transition to adult roles. I still see her as a teenager, and she's a year older than me!

She is an awful actress. Like, truly bad. However, she seems game to camp it up for stuff like Black Swan.
And way to be, Gwyneth. At the time of her arrest Winona had a medical cabinet in her purse, and there's footage of her acting really out of it at an airport and being denied a ticket as a result. She obviously has addiction issues and who knows what else going on. Plus, wasn't the rumor that Winona was up for Shakespeare in Love and Gwyneth stole the script from her home and finagled her way into the role? There's probably two sides to that friendship flame out...

She's been on an episode or two of Drunk History on Comedy Central. It was nice to see her. This Happy Gilmore link confuses me so much. I kept looking for Winona. Boys and Girls, this is what happens when someone doesn't check their links after posting. Bad Ripley! No cookies! Sorry, celerydunk.

I hope I look that good when I'm her age.
Oh, wait. I am her age.
*looks in mirror* Well, shit...

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised to find out that Winona wasn't "hellbent" on taking her down until after the script theft. As horrible as Gwyneth is now, the 1990s version was 100x worse.

Lord knows I'm no Gwyneth fan. But I gotta give side eye to the whole rumor of the stolen script. Mainly because I don't think it works like that in Hollywood. Even if GOOP actually did take a script from Winona's possession- its not like that would have automatically gotten her the part. The producers of Shakespeare in Love weren't going to hire anyone they didn't want for the part. It's not like Winona got a magic script like Willy Wonka's golden ticket and anyone who possessed the script would automatically get the role and the Oscar and everything that came with it. I mean, the producers weren't going to be all 'Well, we REALLY wanted Winona in this role... but Gwyneth has the script in her hands... so what can we do?!?'
Most likely, Winona was a candidate under consideration and therefore got sent a script- but nothing was set in stone yet- no contracts signed or auditions set up. Gwyneth either found out about the project- maybe by stealing Winona's script as she claims- or by Winona talking about it- or just by the buzz going through the industry. Gwyneth then apparently campaigned pretty hard to get the part... But again, if the producers REALLY wanted Winona, they're not going to give Gwyneth the part, just 'cuz.
I mean, remember crazy Sean Young running around telling everyone she was Cat Woman? Well she could have swiped the script right out of Michelle Pfiffer's hands, but it wasn't going to get her the part any more than constantly wearing the costume did.
So whatever dirty pool Gwyneth may or may not have played regarding seeing or even physically taking a script that was in Winona's possession- it's not like she STOLE the part from Winona. The producers don't play like that. They wouldn't have given Gwyneth the role over Winona if they didn't want her in the role. It's really Winona's word against GOOP's as far as all this 'theft' business goes... and you know, GOOP's not the one with a shoplifting charge on her record. Not that that automatically makes her innocent... but I kinda sense some bitterness and projection on Wino's part there.
But again, even if it all went down the way Winona said and Gwyneth came to her house and took her script... that's uncool- but surely not the sole reason she was in Shakespeare in Love and Winona wasn't. The producers always could have sent Winona another script.
So, as much as I love to snark on GOOP (and feel the snark is deserved) this tale/ rumor- I can't get behind it as the whole truth and nothing but. I think it comes more from the 'Winona was having a rough time and feeling bitter about things not going her way' file more than the 'Gwyneth is a horrible person and inherently sucks' file. (Even though there are plenty of other examples out there that Gwyneth is a horrible person and inherently sucks)

I think that Shakespeare in Love really suited Paltrow in a way it wouldn't have suited Ryder. For one, that "English accent" she tried in Dracula wasn't any good. Now, it didn't much matter in that movie because everything was really hammy and over the top anyway and Keanu Reeves' "accent" was even worse, but that's something that would have been a strike against her. And Paltrow has a passable generic English accent going for herself.
IMO Ryder is also a rather limited actress in general, while Paltrow will usually be at least competent. Sometimes more than that (though not often enough to really establish herself as an outstanding actress after her Oscar win). I can see TPTB preferring Paltrow on those grounds, independent of any alleged script stealing. If they wanted Ryder, something like that wouldn't have mattered.

Both Winona and Gwyneth would be perfect to star in Lifetime movies. Winona might be game. Gwyneth? Never! Not even for a guaranteed bought and paid for Emmy (you know, like that guaranteed bought and paid for Oscar that signified the too-early peak of her movie career and forced her to slide downhill ever since. Karma!).
