I think that Shakespeare in Love really suited Paltrow in a way it wouldn't have suited Ryder. For one, that "English accent" she tried in Dracula wasn't any good. Now, it didn't much matter in that movie because everything was really hammy and over the top anyway and Keanu Reeves' "accent" was even worse, but that's something that would have been a strike against her. And Paltrow has a passable generic English accent going for herself. IMO Ryder is also a rather limited actress in general, while Paltrow will usually be at least competent. Sometimes more than that (though not often enough to really establish herself as an outstanding actress after her Oscar win). I can see TPTB preferring Paltrow on those grounds, independent of any alleged script stealing. If they wanted Ryder, something like that wouldn't have mattered. Yeah, I hate to agree with this, but yeah. Winona is very limited as an actress (not that that stops people from being cast in movies, but still) and she had (has?) personality problems. I hate Gwyneth, but she has a natural acting abilities and "good" looks (according to white skinny blond Hollywood standards). Which is why her venturing to GOOP is so bewildering.

It's hilarious/over-long/and yes...the British accents are terrible. 2. So when I first saw the movie Sliding Doors I thought the movie was good, and then I watched it again and her accent isn't great. It felt, the entire time, like I could see Paltrow forcing the generic English accent. 3. Ryder was great playing teens who were "off" enough. Like in Heathers and Beetlejuice, the problem is when you see her in movies that required more range than that like Age of Innocence is when her limitations as an actress really came into play. However, she's hilarious in Drunk History.

She was my patronus during my high school years for this reason.

I'd love to see her make a comeback. Fans of the new X-Men made it clear that the coveted comic-book audience definitely doesn't share the "any woman over 35 is too old" bullshit that Hollywood still clings to, so I could see her in the new Batman/Superman universe. She already showed she can do action and sci-fi gravitas in Alien Resurrection (a movie I will love and defend until the day I die) as well as deadpan humor (Beetlejuice), total commitment to risky concepts (Dracula), semi-poised badassery (Heathers), and isn't "weird" about her niche in Hollywood (Black Swan) or her age (Spock's mom in Star Trek). With the right script, I think she could find some real success in the second half of her career.
Or maybe I just love her because her she was one of the first to point out that Mel Gibson was a dickhead. Or that look of pure disgust she gave the Hollywood DA that tried to use her activism in the Polly Klaas case as a "zinger" during her shoplifting trial. Or that she's surprisingly honest about her problems with depression and insecurity. Or probably it's because Bettlejuice, Heathers, Mr. Deeds, Mermaids, Reality Bites, and Dracula are some of my favorite movies and she's my favorite part about them. She's not in a hurry to get married or have kids and would rather do excellent but "under the radar" movies like The Iceman than become a professional "celebrity". And Tim Burton likes her which is a solid endorsement for me.

So... nobody else watched Worricker: Turks & Caicos on Masterpiece Contemporary last night? I was kind of shocked to see Winona in the company of Bill Nighy, Helena Bonham Carter, Christopher Walken, and Ralph Fiennes. (And I thought William H. Macy, but it turned out to be Dylan Baker.)
It must be at least 10-15 years since I saw her in anything, and I still found her distractingly Winona Ryder-y. It was a fragile woman-child role that lent itself to Winona Ryderiness, though. And she's still super-pretty, apart from the too-wide crazy eyes.

I saw some of it randomly. I thought it was an old show at first. I couldn't quite figure out if it was her or not, but the voice gave it away. Her acting is the same, and while pretty, she's kind of generically pretty now. Maybe it was the longer hair. I don't know - it didn't make me long for lots more of Winona Ryder on my screens.

These stories of her being "difficult" or a "bitch", where do they come from?

I've never seen any stories calling her a bitch or difficult. I think most of her problems come with being a compulsive liar/exaggerator. She also has major drug issues, so sometimes she does weird things like steals or barfs at parties or get denied flight check-in at airports.

What has she lied about? (apart from the whole shoplifting "researching a role" thing) And when has she puked at a party?
