This Black History Month, I’ve been highlighting some lesser known figures of black American achievement on my Facebook page, one per day. In fact, I will be covering the cardiac surgeon Daniel Hale Williams, who performed the very first open heart surgery that was successful in 1893! “On July 10, 1893, [Dr.] Williams repaired the torn pericardium of a knife wound patient, James Cornish. Cornish, who was stabbed directly through the left fifth costal cartilage, had been admitted the previous night. Williams decided to operate the next morning in response to continued bleeding, cough and "pronounced" symptoms of shock. He performed this surgery, without the benefit of penicillin or blood transfusion, at Provident Hospital, Chicago. It was not reported until 1897. He undertook a second procedure to drain fluid. About fifty days after the initial procedure, Cornish left the hospital.” Wikipedia article on Dr. Daniel Hale Williams. The man who has been credited with the first heart transplant surgery, Dr. Christiaan Barnard, performed the surgery in December 1967. However, Dr. Barnard underplayed the risks of such a surgery and the patient died 18 days later of pneumonia due to the immunosuppressive drugs. Yet, he was slotted for this achievement (which was done blank years earlier by a black American surgeon) and was given Time’s Magazine’s “Person of the Year” honor while Df. Williams’ pioneering work is more obscure. Wikipedia article. It remains infuriating that so many achievements of black Americans have been either downplayed or not taught in the United States of America, and I have learned more about African-American history after I left school than in school.

I hadn’t heard of Williams. Thanks for sharing his story.
I thought Barnaad was famous for the first heart transplant, which was considered shocking at the time. That’s quite different from open heart surgery. Maybe that was later than 1967. Can’t remember.
That’s not to diminish the incredible achievement of Dr. Williams. My dad’s life was saved by open heart surgery, so I’m always grateful to those whose work made that possible.

Dr. Barnard still used the template from Williams and had the benefit of penicillin and blood transfusions! Speaking of blood transfusions, Charles R Drew, another black American doctor, was the first to create successful blood transfusion and starting blood banks shortly before the start of World War II, which save thousands of lives with other would’ve otherwise would’ve died of massive blood loss. He was originally on the panel for American Red Cross, but resigned because they were still segregating blood donations taken from blacks and whites, a practice they didn’t stop until 1950.

I once listened to a long explanation from my nephew of cryptocurrency and mining bitcoin, and I still have no idea what any of it is, why it's worth money, or how you "mine" something that doesn't really exist.
I'm going to keep my investment strategy really old fashioned: buy stock in well-managed companies that sell something people need.

What in the name of all things not like that in my day old lady moment shakes stick at, are NFTs ?? I think you’re probably better off not knowing. I certainly have no idea! But whenever that market crashes, I won’t lose my retirement.

It made sense to me the way he explained it, but I couldn't possibly begin to try to explain it to anyone else. People have made money off it, though, but I think you'd have to invest a really large sum to make a considerable profit from crypto currency.
