Gabourey Sidibe is young, African-American and Oscar-nominated, and J. Hud won for Dreamgirls in 06, but, yeah, they're the only under-30 black women that I can recall being nominated in recent years.
(Still haven't seen Precious, but love Gabby on The Big C).

And as far as getting a talented, Oscar-nominated actress goes... well, see, but white actors aren't inherently more talented than POC actors. I'm sure that there are plenty of talented POC actors. They're probably not winning Oscars or other awards because, well, they're hardly ever given a chance to show their stuff in Hollywood, this movie being a perfect example. Bingo bingo bingo. And it's not like this is happening in isolation. Akira, Avatar The Last Airbender, 21... the list goes on and on of movies where a character who was POC or ambiguously POC just "happened" to turn white during the casting process. (In Akira's case the casting isn't nailed down, but the initial shortlist for both male leads was ALL white. If the casting was so "colorblind" then why wasn't there even ONE Asian, black or Latino actor on the shortlist?) Every individual occurrence of racebending has its own unique set of excuses. These excuses might even make sense on a micro level. But on a macro level it adds up to actors of color being shut out of roles, even roles that were originally written for their race or ethnicity.

Link[/color] to her interview on Letterman and some photos. I like her with the dark hair, and I love the navy dress and orange belt. Looking forward to her as Katniss!

Those pics make her, the dress, and the hair look terrible but she looked pretty in the broadcast.

She was great in The Hunger Games. I've seen several clips of her promoting the movie and it surprised me that she comes across as so young and goofy, not necessarily in a bad way but less polished/groomed than I would have expected.

I like her. Loved her in Winter's Bone (she obviously has heaps of acting talent) and in interviews she comes across as goofy, strong-willed and with a real belief in her own abilities. That stuff can make her sound a little cocky at times, but I think she's better off with those kinds of personality traits in Hollywood than being too soft. For example, I can only imagine the pressure she's going to be under these days to lose weight and get skinny-skinny. I think she might be the real thing: a starlet that has enough acting talent, and a good enough head on her shoulders to go the distance and become a great actress even as she gets older.

Alright, I read those interview excerpts too quickly and thought she was talking about Lenny Kravitz, and I was ready to hate her, but Zoe Kravitz is a totally different thing! I still wouldn't do it, but it's not skeevy.
