I saw Dakota snap at her mom Melanie in a super bitchy tone and then rolled her eyes at her when they walked the red carpet at some event a few years back and Melanie looked genuinely hurt and embarrassed. I felt really sorry for her. It made me grateful that my daughters have never ever behaved that ways towards me in public (of course, they could be little shits at home towards me when they were teens). Other than that, I don't really know much about Dakota, she was actually kind of funny when she hosted SNL, but that snotty attitude towards her mom on camera was disappointing. It was the Oscars and Melanie was asked about her refusal to watch 50SOG, which apparently she's been asked about a lot. There was clearly some sensitivity on Dakota's part about her mother's public refusal to watch her big movie, and some irritation about the stock explanation Melanie had been giving. I can kind of relate, because if I had to answer questions on a red carpet alongside my mother, there's a very good chance that I would be unable to hide my irritation too. Mother-daughter relationships don't belong on red carpets.

I just saw this on Twitter--Dakota roasted Ellen on her own show in a deliciously uncomfortable way. Story here. Nutshell: Ellen teasingly gave Dakota grief for not inviting Ellen to her 30th birthday party. Dakota corrected her, telling her she was indeed invited but didn't come. That was the weekend Ellen was palling around with George W Bush, and Ellen's discomfort upon realizing that was notable. I have always thought that Dakota had the personality of a wet noodle, so I this made me rethink my opinion about her.

There may be more to Dakota than she lets on and Ellen it would seem is not as nice as everyone thinks.

I think Dakota intended the whole thing to be funny and it came off as awkward and confrontational because she has terrible timing and says everything in the same snotty way, so it's difficult to tell when she's joking. I'm not ready to give her credit for being a stealth genius.
You could see the fury in Ellen's eyes though, and I'm sure her staff suffered for this one.
What's weird about Ellen is that it's well known that she's mean and nasty and treats her staff horribly, but somehow she still successfully brown noses celebrities. They have to know what's up with her, but they still socialize with her and act like friends. Why on earth would Ellen get an annual invitation to Dakota Johnson's birthday party? They clearly aren't close.

OT but not sure that Ellen's actually mean. She doesn't like people - she likes animals. All about the animals. People not so much.

LOL. I'm the same way. I can't imagine doing daytime television for x number of years doesn't eventually turn you into a monster. You have to be perky all the time and keep it up. But I know not much about Ellen.
Dakota is mostly boring and witless and I would imagine Melanie didn't want to see her movie(s) because they didn't get the greatest reviews. Crap based on crap books. I would have to give Melanie a pass although I can't imagine she's any less than a selfish, narcissist in general.

I've read too many times to count (as in: hundreds at this point) that Ellen is cold, vicious and mean to her staff and always has been. I've read so many comments from people who worked on the show or knew someone who worked on the show who said that it was the worst job they ever had and they were miserable. We once had an extended discussion about this (I think it was the Celebrity Schadenfreude thread) and there were people on this board with specific stories about people they knew who worked on Ellen's show and how brutal she was. I believe it.
A common theme in many of these stories is about how Ellen changes as soon as they cut to commercial and that the lack of niceness is not hidden at all. Apparently she's not even nice to a lot of the celebrities who come on the show either. And that's what puzzles me because she has so many celebrity friends. As Kathy Griffin wrote, it's "a mean streak that everyone in Hollywood knows about". So I don't know...people like Jennifer Aniston look the other way and are friends with her, but still keep their distance?

I wonder how it is for Portia? I could see that mean stress extending to relationships.

I wonder how it is for Portia? I could see that mean stress extending to relationships. I wonder about that too. I know Anne Heche is loony tunes and has a lot of acrimonious breakups under her belt, but I read her book, and the stuff about Ellen not being very nice was believable. She said Ellen was very controlling and didn't want her to work. It's quite the coincidence that Portia officially retired from acting in her early 40s for no apparent reason, even though she still had good work opportunities.

I've heard the same and from so many sources that I believe it's almost certainly the truth. I imagine very few of her celebrity friends are real friends - more likely they have a mutually beneficial relationship where both parties get positive publicity/social media content as well as the occasional lifestyle perk, so they have a cordial relationship built on mutual gain that would almost certainly fall apart if either party ceases to be useful and/or sufficiently rich and famous. It also wouldn't be surprising if she is actually nice to people who she thinks are worth it, so big celebrities largely see a very different side of her.
