They did a press release and the total went up to 18 dead (17 males | 1 female). I just don't know when this will ever end. The type of weapon used was created for mass carnage. It's not just some gun that shoots one at a time and the type of destruction that it does to the human body is just awful. These poor people are eviscerated. But you know, right to bear arms and all.

What's infuriating is the lack of coverage of THE guy. Like it's basic brief info. I have a lot of friends in Lewiston (went to college with a lot of them) and they all say that everyone knows someone who knew of him and that it was a "steer clear he's... odd" But all we're getting is basically "he was in the National Guard or whatever. Like my town made some headlines a couple of weeks ago when one of our selectwomen told a constituent (rightfully imo) to go fuck himself in a meeting. That guy she said it to? 100% is capable of the same nonsense. I promise you that if he did the same the news would be like "unassuming white dude" while everyone in town would be like "town krank and we all saw this shit coming from a mile away" But if this dude was black? Latino? Muslim? WILDLY different coverage....

The crypto scammer has the last name Bankman? That's ironic and I'm glad he's (probably) going to serve time.

Today's school shooting is in Perry, Iowa, which is very close to where I spent my first year of teaching. Although it has been many years since I left, it is jarring (as I'm sure others have noted) to see familiar buildings in the news stories. I hope we find a way to end this madness soon.

Today's school shooting is in Perry, Iowa, which is very close to where I spent my first year of teaching. So far this year, off the top of my head: - Two children in the Twin Cities were hit by stray bullets over New Year's. - A former co-worker of mine reported on Facebook that her sister works at the school in Perry, Iowa, where the kids were shot. - There was a fatal shooting very close to the home of one of my friends, in Wilkes-Barre, PA. - Another friend of mine, in Georgia, went out to her car on New Year's Day and discovered that a bullet, probably from an AR-type gun, had shattered the rear windshield. People like to shoot into the air, being too stupid to realize that what goes up also comes down. Or not caring. That's just my home, and people I know, and it's only January 4.

Could the new gun law in Iowa be a cause? I know it's difficult to keep track of mass shooting in the US, but this happened pretty recently.

I live in the Des Moines, Iowa metro area, about 40 miles from Perry. I have former colleagues who work at Perry CSD. Current rumors are the shooter was "tired of the bullying" and deliberately targeted the principal. Why he shot at students and others is a question only he would have been able to answer. I am devastated about the sixth-grade student who was killed. I teach that grade-level, and they are still babies. ETA: The principal of Perry High School Dan Marburger, who was shot by a 17-year-old student, died yesterday. From all reports, he was an amazing principal, and his actions saved students from the attack. May his memory be blessing to his family and the community of Perry.
