Death in the digital age is weird. Very agreed. I have a friend whose fiance died a few years ago, and her FB status still says, "in a relationship with [someone who has been dead for perhaps longer than they were together]." Topic? I have nothing. I like Kathy Griffin, so I'm glad she's working.

Still OT: And how about the "Wish [your dead loved one] a happy birthday!" notices from FB? Weird, weird, weird...
ETA: OH! I just thought of what weirds me out even more: the "[Dead friend] likes Shutterfly" (or any other business) posts. The bday announcements aren't quite as jarring because it makes sense almost immediately. But the "likes" kinda look like they JUST liked it, which always takes me aback for a sec.

I think one reason for that is it's very very very hard to shut down social media accounts for a dead loved one, particularly if you don't know their password. It's pretty much impossible on Facebook.

Yeah, I've read about that, too.
(Just to clarify: I'm not blaming or shaming or criticizing websites... I just think we're still in a figuring-it-all-out period with social media, so it's messy and uncomfy sometimes.)

A guy I want to high school with passed away from an Undiagnosed heart condition when we were in our 20s. His closest friends set up a Facebook page for him 10 years after he died. It's an individual, personal account John Smith Tribute you can friend him. It's a nice idea but when you really think about it it is a little weird that he wasn't even alive when FB was invented and he has 250+ friends. He was a really nice guy. /ot

Yeah, I get a couple of dead folks in the "people you may know". The sister of a high school classmate passed away, so her family changed her profile picture to this dark shadowed picture which kind of creeps me out, not that it's my business.

I have to be somewhat amused that Rivers got snubbed on Oscar night from the In Memoriam segment. She's been caustic and nasty to so many people on the red carpet that it looks like the producers of the show took a small portion of revenge by leaving her out.
That, or that she wasn't an actress. One good movie (Spaceballs) in her whole career doesn't lend itself to star status.

That's why I unfriend someone when they die (it's happened a couple of times) because when the birthday reminders come up and I'm going down the list sending out birthday wishes, I don't want to post "Happy birthday!" to the wall of someone who is dead. It was pretty rude of them to snub her. She's been a writer, comedian, actess, and icon for decades. She not only broke barriers for female comedians but for female performers in general. If Michael Jackson's sorry ass got an Oscar memorial then Joan deserved one a thousand times over. Shame on them.

I wonder if it has anything to do with the Oscar host darling, Johnny Carson.

Johnny died 10 years ago, and I think most of his production cronies are at least retired, if not dead as well.
