Maybe he thinks he's so enlightened because in comparison to he hangs around with (his brother, Ben) he appears woke. It's the glass-half-full situation...
On Russell Crowe, did anyone ever expect anything from him except tantrums and phone throwing? He has a reputation and it's not great. Damon, on the other hand, has built a career out of being wholesome and good. And a little lecture-y too, so when you're lecturing people on how to behave, you'd better back it up with your own behavior (cough, cosby, cough).

I've had it with women's value having anything to do with being a man's daughter, wife, or sister. Our value and our right to be treated with the same respect that men receive should not be dependent upon our relationships to men.
As far as Russell Crowe, he probably doesn't have any issue whatsoever with HW's behavior, he's got skeletons a-plenty in his closet, and I can't imagine a publicist coming up with any statement that would reflect well upon him.

I posted something along those lines on FB and I'm getting some pushback from some concerned "Dads." Whatever, dudes. Sorry it took you having a child to learn empathy.

OMG, there was a Vulture article saying the same thing and so many butthurt men in the comments. "Why do you hate a guy for CARING ABOUT HIS DAUGHTERS??" Um, maybe because the "it didn't matter until I had daughters" attitude is exactly what's going to make YOUR daughter's life so miserable, genius?

I think it also harkens back to the idea of women and children as chattel. "Don't mess with MY daughter/wife. Now that I have these investments I can kind of get how no one should harass or rape girls and women in general. As long as they are good girls like MINE."

That was very well done. I particularly liked the closing sentence: "The way he chooses to use his influence suggests that he still believes that we live in a meritocracy, but one that works only for men who look just like Matt Damon."
