‘Lewy body dementia killed Robin’I've never heard of this disease. How sad to know he was in so much pain before his death... Still hard to believe he's gone, but I guess he probably didn't want to suffer anymore. Can't blame him for that. That's awful.

That's awful. So she's saying the hallucinations and/or combination of the pain drove him to end his life, and not the depression he suffered. I can't even imagine. That's a lot of chemical imbalance to deal with. I read somewhere he only had 3 weeks left to live. So sad.

That's what took out Estelle Getty (from The Golden Girls). I believe most dementias are caused by Alzheimer's, but there are some other kinds. I think Lewy body dementia is one of the least common. I've witnessed firsthand how dementia can cause someone to decline. I can understand if that's what prompted Robin to chuck deuces, knowing full well what was in store for him. Now I'm reminded of that Law & Order: SVU episide with Treat Williams portraying a retired star quarterback who was suffering from dementia cause by his playing days. ETA: divasahm - I agree with you that more funding for education and research would be beneficial. By the way, The New York Times ran this article recently: Costs for Dementia Care Far Exceeding Other Diseases, Study Finds

One of my dearest friends lost her dad to LBD. It is often mistaken for and/or misdiagnosed as Parkinson's Disease or Alzheimer's. When Friend's dad died, after years of suffering, his sister-in-law was asked to take charge of the obituary, and she requested donations to the local Alzheimer's research foundation, because she'd never heard of LBD.
If nothing else, Robin's death will serve as an educational opportunity. Maybe this new awareness will inspire more to donate to organizations supporting research and treatment options.

I guess I can understand the desire to set the record straight and Lewy Body dementia is a horrific illness, but so what if the underlying cause had been clinical depression? I can't help but be frustrated by this. It seemed as if Robin Williams was a beloved enough figure that when he committed suicide, it made a lot of people rethink their ideas about suicide and mental illness. Robin's son Zac spoke at a fundraiser for a local mental health charity about six weeks ago. He seems like a fine young man.

LBD and Parkinson's/Parkinson's dementia are closely related (because they are both caused by the same kind of cell breakdown). I wonder if he had both or just LBD and not Parkinson's. The primary difference seems to be that with Parkinson's, the physical symptoms appear before the mental, while it is the opposite with LBD.
When my mom was first diagnosed with Parkinson's they were afraid that she had LBD because she was hallucinating and was delusional. Turns out it they just had her Parkinson's meds jacked up way too high and once they lowered them she was fine. And even now she can tell when her meds are off because she'll have auditory hallucinations. But she said that those first few days when they had her meds wrong were total hell. She knew something was wrong with her, but she couldn't sort it out and she thought she had gone crazy. If Robin was experiencing anything similar to that, I could see how he could decide that he didn't want it to get any worse.

My dad has Parkinson's on top of dementia/ALZ symptoms (we haven't ruled out ALZ but dementia is definitely the main issue) and this story has felt like a punch in the gut every time it has popped up on various feeds I frequent. Poor Robin. It's all a tragedy- and I agree that depression still plays a role here. All of the conditions deserve to be seen in a different light. Next week it will be two years since I had to have my dad committed for psychiatric stabilization, then subsequently put in a group home to help him navigate a semblance of a life. Any of these conditions can bring the strongest, fittest man or woman to their knees. These past two years have been the hardest of my life.
I hope Robin is at peace, and making all the angels piss their pants laughing.

I was never a big fan of Hook- but this is ADORABLE! And bittersweet that the grown-up Pan himself couldn't join in the reunion fun. .
