I just remember leaving the theater for Captain Phillips thinking he’d earned another Oscar. His last scene in that movie is some of the best acting I have ever seen! All the tension built through the entire movie is released when he breaks down. And I love the way the medical officer speaks to him so calmly and patiently, as a surrogate for the audience. "You're ok now" It's just brilliant.

I think there's an increasing threshold for reward as you've gotten more Oscars. There's only 6 actors with 3 or more Oscars (Katherine Hepburn, Daniel Day-Lewis, Meryl Streep, Ingrid Bergman, Jack Nicholson, and Walter Brennan), and I think there's considerable reluctance to add to this list unless some has both an undeniable performance AND a career deserving of being in such company. That being said, I think Hanks is a great candidate to ultimately make it.

Woo hoo! I'd watch Tom Hanks sort socks, so I'm happy for him.

Woo hoo! I'd watch Tom Hanks sort socks, so I'm happy for him. You just know he would have some kind of happy little game or song to go along with the process. Maybe even a Johnny Carson type story about how he used to do that for a living that would be goofy, charming and fascinating all at once!

I think Hanks is a great actor deserving of two Oscars (while acknowledging that "deserving" is always super subjective in creative fields). I'm just not sure that he's gotten them for the right performances. But that is the way of the Academy, I guess... Washington won for "Traning Day", Pacino for "Scent of a Woman", Paul Newman for "The Colour of Money" (still the most WTH decision for me. He's given at least a dozen superior performances, arguably two of them after that win with "Nobody's Fool" and "Road to Perdition"). DiCaprio for "Revenant". Phoenix will probably win for "Joker", though he's IMO produced superior work in the past, but he's "due" now. Adam Driver, Taron Egerton etc., if they keep it up, will perhaps get wins in ten, twenty years for "respectable" but inferior work, because once again the Academy thinks it owes them.
This has been an absolute pest particularly in the acting categories for decades IMO. "Make up Oscars". I also think Laura Dern is getting one this year, because once again the Academy thinks it owes her. In the same vein, now Hanks has trouble getting even nominated even if his work is deserving, because he already has two Oscars and the Academy thinks he doesn't need any more. It's one huge eye-roll.

It's one huge eye-roll. Exhibit A of Oscar stupidity is usually Scorsese. No nomination for Taxi Driver or The Age of Innocence. No win for Raging Bull (lost to Robert Redford for Ordinary People) or Goodfellas (lost to Kevin f**king Costner for Dances with Wolves). His consolation Oscar is for The Departed which is a damn remake. Totally agree on the wrong performances awards. My faves are when they did them a year apart for Nicole Kidman (Moulin Rouge deserved, won for The Hours the following year) and for Renee Zellweger (Chicago deserved, won for Cold Mountain the following year). I'm no fan of Joaquin Phoenix as a person but I enjoyed his GG speech when he ragged on the idea of how stupid these competitions are.

I bet when he wins the Oscar next month, his speech will be nicer. Everyone, even curmudgeons like Sean Penn or recluses like DDL, gets in line to get that shiny gold man.

I'm waiting to see how the SAG Awards shake out before I predict whether or not he wins, although I desperately want him to.
While I'm one of Forrest Gump's few defenders I think they jumped the gun on giving him a second one for that. They should've waited for Saving Private Ryan (and spared us some of Roberto Begnini's antics). And I agree that he definitely should've at least been nominated for Captain Phillips.

The nomination is the win for him this year. The Oscar is Pitt's, imo. If not Pitt, I think Joe Pesci is next in line - he was the best performance in The Irishman. I do think Hanks's long draught was due to the back-to-back Oscars and sense he'd been awarded enough. I also really love Forrest Gump even though it's uncool to admit it and think Hanks deserved the win.

Tom & Rita at the SAG awards. He's in Prada and she's in Roland Mouret. Looks like Rita's glam squad showed up on time last night.
