2019 me: see someone I like's folder at top of forum and immediate thought is "oh, no, what did he do?" Breathing a sigh of relief. Hahaha. I had a real hand-to-my-chest moment when I saw this thread pop up. I don't know what the ratings are but it's interesting how he seems to be trouncing Fallon in the "late night wars" in terms of cultural relevance.

Colbert by all accounts is a good guy, so I would be devastated to learn he actually kicks puppies or something.
One of my strongest memories of him is when the Daily Show was doing live coverage of the 2008 election, and they got the word that Obama won. He was at the desk with Jon Stewart and they were supposed to have some banter about it (with Colbert in his conservative character), but Colbert started crying when they heard that Obama won, and thankfully Jon smoothly covered for him. Colbert is usually such a pro, but that was one moment where his real feelings overcame his ability to play his character.

I groaned when I saw Colbert's name for the same reasons you guys did. I'm just weary at this point.
I like Colbert, I think he's an upstanding guy, but nobody's perfect. He might say or do something I don't like eventually. Anyone up on a pedestal will eventually fall so I try not to do that anymore. It saves me the frustration of having to cancel everybody as soon as they disappoint me.

I've heard nothing but good things about Colbert. He seems to have a big heart and practices using it.

It saves me the frustration of having to cancel everybody as soon as they disappoint me. I am a HUGE Strangers with Candy fan, and I went down the YouTube rabbit hole last weekend watching clips that I hadn't seen in a long time. (I own all the episodes on DVD, but don't have a DVD player anymore.) Stephen was one of the main writers on the show (with Paul Dinello) and there are some truly twisted plot lines (which is what makes the show what it is). There's one where the school administration gets Jerry to spy on her another student to determine if she's retarded. Retarded (in hushed tones) is presented the way you might say "Russian spy." When I watched that one, it struck me that that one wouldn't fly in today's environment and it made me realize that if Fox News ever wanted to take aim at Stephen Colbert, they could probably cherry pick his appearances in Strangers with Candy. That said, I think Stephen is incredibly grounded and uses his writing as an outlet for the shadow side that each and every one of us have.

To quote Seinfeld's "The Couch": Colbert is a very devout Catholic and so far he's only given glimpses of the socially acceptable side of that. I don't know exactly what his beliefs are, but I realize I may find out eventually he has some opinions I don't like. The internet wouldn't be able to type CANCELED fast enough.

I don't get this whole notion of canceling people because they say or do something that upsets you. I think there's a sliding scale of human decency, and I'm astonished by how easily some 20-30-somethings cancel people.
I got into it with a 25-year-old who wanted Gandhi and MLK canceled because they said/did some problematic things. Well, they were complex men for sure, and I'm incredibly disappointed by their treatment of women. But I also respect what their legacy is regarding civil rights and bringing non-violence to the forefront of political movements. Our country would be very different without their vision and leadership. If you go around canceling everyone who disappoints you, there will be no one left. (JMO)
People are complex, and no one is ever going to tick off all your boxes.
I feel in the age of social media we're way too quick to judge people we don't even really know, and I find it troubling, to say the least.
Back on topic. I love Stephen, and also had a moment of "why is his thread at the top of celebrities?"

I wish I could like this comment 100 times Martini Girl. It's so odd to me that people are almost searching for a thing to bring everyone down into the dirt. Yet, when using that same barometer, who measures up- no one- not even the people shouting about the cancelling of another. Who has a perfect record of every comment, action, gaze, etc matching up with their own standards? No one.
It is a sliding scale- and decent people may hold views you disagree with. Even on issues as controversial as abortion. Colbert has never openly advocated against women's right to choose, he has never pushed any Catholic agenda as far as I can see. If he chooses to hold beliefs that differ from mine, whilst not impeding on mine - I am fine with that. I am fairly confident no one person on the planet exists that holds 100% perfect views/opinions/thoughts at all times if I was in charge of measuring them.
Don't get me wrong- people certainly should be called out for terrible actions, but in todays age it almost feels like "terrible" is any possible action or even thought that might make another person even slightly uncomfortable. That's not terrible- that's living in a world outside of a bubble.

To quote Seinfeld's "The Couch":Colbert is a very devout Catholic and so far he's only given glimpses of the socially acceptable side of that. I don't know exactly what his beliefs are, but I realize I may find out eventually he has some opinions I don't like. The internet wouldn't be able to type CANCELED fast enough. My mom goes to church every Sunday, she’s a devout lifelong Catholic, and she is pro-life. But she also thinks that it’s not the Church’s job to legislate, and believes abortion should be kept legal(and that a lot of the pro-lifers need to focus on the kids who are in need now). She’s religious, but also liberal, and willing to call out the Church on bullshit—a few of the Catholics I know are (Some are also conservative assholes). I kind of guess, based on interviews, that Colbert may feel similarly to the more liberal Catholics. That is, he may finds comfort and devotion in the Church, but realizes it’s run by men and very imperfect (that’s how it’s been described to me). I’m still a Christian, and I know that I have to usually follow that up with a “But not like Mike Huckabee...” because I believe that Jesus’s message, whether he was divine or not, was beautiful and something I want to follow. I’m just frustrated with everything on the internet being either black or white. It’s like with the rise of social media and the 24-hour news cycle we’re all (myself included) ready to stop looking for nuance in situations. Also—Ginger, I respect your opinion, and get we may be approaching the same place from a different angle, hope that comes through.
