They definitely got what he was doing on Saturday night; the jokes at the dinner seemed a little more obvious than they are on the Report. The question is, have they ever watched the show, did they get (before Saturday) that it's a satire, and did they realize Colbert's a liberal?
I'm thinking no...

When I heard he'd been invited to the correspondents' dinner, I called my mom and said, "Holy shit, do they even watch his show?! Or do they just not get it?"
Mr. Colbert is The Man. Balls of steel indeed. I luuuve him.

I thought he was hysterical. I also wasn't surprised it didn't go over well. Just another example of my party not being the party I signed up for years ago if that makes any sense. We used to have a sense of humor. But much like common sense among many other things that is a thing of the past.

I had to watch it again, and I still can't believe he had the nerve to say those things with the prez sitting a few feet away. Good for him! I loved the look on W's face when Colbert showed his press secretary "audition tape." His face was beet red (which I've noticed always happens when someone contradicts/disagrees with him -- thank dog it doesn't happen very often ) with anger and he was trying to force himself to smile. It was priceless.

The guys has cojoons of steel. I couldn't even watch it, I was so uncomfortable!
Funny lines though.
Some of my favorite parts:
"And though I am a committed Christian, I believe that everyone has the right to their own religion, be you Hindu, Jewish or Muslim. I believe there are infinite paths to accepting Jesus Christ as your personal savior."
"The greatest thing about this man is he's steady. You know where he stands. He believes the same thing Wednesday that he believed on Monday, no matter what happened Tuesday. Events can change; this man's beliefs never will. As excited as I am to be here with the president, I am appalled to be surrounded by the liberal media that is destroying America, with the exception of Fox News. Fox News gives you both sides of every story: the president's side, and the vice president's side."
"Jesse Jackson is here, the Reverend. Haven't heard from the Reverend in a little while. I had him on the show. Very interesting and challenging interview. You can ask him anything, but he's going to say what he wants, at the pace that he wants. It's like boxing a glacier. Enjoy that metaphor, by the way, because your grandchildren will have no idea what a glacier is."

Watching that, for the first time in five years, I'm ALMOST proud to be an American....
Did Helen Thomas participate willingly or was it all pasted footage? She sure as hell seemed to be tickled by the audition tape nevertheless.

From Richard Cohen, a columnist from the Washington Post, whom I normally agree with: I think Cohen is talking out of his ass on this one.

My take on this was that they *did* get it - hence the no laughing. Colbert wasn't just ripping George a new one, he was implicity ripping the press a new one - the mere fact that it takes a professional comedian to actually hold the presidential feet to the fire - because the press have abjectly failed to do so - is an implicit rebuke to that (cringing, sniveling) press corps. He didn't get many laughs and yeah, loads of those jokes technically "fell flat" but I don't think for a second that Colbert was really there to make people laugh. He's a smart guy, he saw an opportunity to say a lot of things no one would normally be allowed to say to the president (i.e. - the context of the annual 'roast', the fact something officially labeled 'comedy' can get away with far more than something labeled, for example, 'sit-down interview') and he said them. The silence in that room was due to the majority of its inhabitants bathing luxuriously in their own failure and shame and Boo Fucking Yah! to Colbert for saying what he did. You are 1000% correct. The press laughed when he was attacking Bush but when he was telling it like it is about them they lost their sense of humor. He was right on the money about them and since they recognized the truth it didn't sit well. I thought he was hilarious.Too bad the press has a stick up it's ass when it comes to them being put on the spot.
