I think she was truly in love with Liam (whether or not it was a healthy kind of love) and tried to adjust herself for him. And he, like a lot of men, wanted to "save" her from herself and put up with her shenanigans. But the center could not hold.
He'll be a lot happier when and if he finds someone more traditional, and by that I mean, not acting out like Miley all the time. She is still such an attention-seeking little girl.

I just now saw a rumor that he's spending time with Isabel Lucas. I think she is perfect for him. Nice Australian girl. Into surfing, saving the whales and Byron Bay. Not burdened by any brains or personality. (I like Liam well enough, but the "simple bae" nickname was fitting.) And Isabel's career never took off, so she can be the second banana and stay home earth mothering his children, if that's truly what he wants. |

I think whatever Miley does, the ghost of Hannah Montana will always follow her, so she'll be acting out all her life as long as she pursues celebrityhood. It's hard to explain, but if her life was movie, she is following the exact path a scriptwriter would choose for a young woman who played a chirpy teen on a sitcom and wanted to rebel against it.
The childhood stars who managed to leave their past roles behind them and transition to adult stars are always the ones who took long breaks... Jody Foster, Ron Howard, Jennifer Beales.

It seems like she honestly believes she's left Hannah Montana behind. At one point, she was publicly advising Justin Bieber on how to transition into being seen as an adult. When you look at her siblings in the public eye, her acting out doesn't really seem like an anomaly. |

Liam filed for divorce. This should be an easy one. No kids. At least one house they can sell and split the proceeds of. They have a lot pets, but I'm certain most of them are Miley's. I don't picture him haggling or angling for any kind of support.

I read that they were going to "take their time" with the divorce and probably get back together. I guess that was from Miley's camp, LOL. Liam is doing them both a favor if he keeps walking and never looks back.
ETA: Miley's people are telling People Magazine that she's "surprised" and "disappointed" that he filed for divorce and "It's just hard for her to think she will never have this again with Liam."
So I guess she really did think he would hang around and engage in months/years of back and forth drama while she went off and made out with other people in public and told the world he's a substance abuser.
I've had varied opinions about Miley through the years, but for sure I know she's an asshole now.
And I think she'll still be doing this shit when she's 45, just with different people
