I just watched this last night and... wow. Gael García Bernal in drag. I haven't been this excited by the gender-bending pretty since Johnny Depp in Before Night Falls. Has anyone else seen this?
I loved it, but for the life of me I can't remember what happened in the last scene. I watched it with my boyfriend and he can't remember it either. (Might have been the wine...)
I love the movie-within-a-movie and the ambiguousness of the plot events. It reminded me of Brian DePalma but much less cheesy and self-important.

Yeah, GGB was supah-hot. This was much better than Almodovar's Talk to Her. I think I liked All About My Mother more than this film, though, as far as his recent stuff goes. I didn't have an intense emotional connection to these characters, although the chemistry among the actors was palpable. I rented the film from Blockbuster and a certain sex act toward the beginning of the film was pixelated. Is this how it was shown in theaters? (Not sure how to do spoilers, but I think you'll know what I'm talking about if you've seen it.)

Wow, my thread has been resurrected!
I don't remember any pixelation, but then again I'm not exactly sure what sex scene you're referring to. It's been a couple months since I saw it.

I just saw it this weekend, but I can't figure out what they would pixelate. I don't remember that much actual nudity during the sex scenes.
I do remember the hotness of GGB not quite pulling his underwear down prior to jumping in the pool. Yowza!

Ok, since I don't have to spoiler, it was in the beginning, when GGB goes back to that guy's room after GGB's cabaret act. He is sucking the other guys c*ck and the guy falls asleep during the act. The whole sucking part was pixelated.

Maybe it was the rated version. We got the unrated one.
I liked it, but it fell somewhere in the middle for me. Better than Kika or Woman on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, but below Talk to Her or Live Flesh. I think it was somewhat autobiographical in showing how Enrique searches for his script material. In that Almodovar himself probably gets a lot of his ideas for movies from the tabloids.
Bernal was the yumminess though... he made a gorgeous 1980s drag queen with all its seeming fragility and frosty power. Not many male actors could pull that off. I can only think of Johnny Depp, and whoever played the lead in Hedwig and the Angry Inch. However, I thought the actor who played story-Enrique (with the black motorcycle jacket and curly hair) was way hotter. Bernal looks too much like my hubby.
One part that confused me throughout the movie was how much Juan pushed the relationship with real-Enrique to make it in the acting business, and how much of it was due to his own mental unbalancedness. It was never clear to me. The impression I got he was more psychotic than ambitious, assuming his brother's identity out of the guilt of stealing Fr. Manolo away from him, then commiting fratricide.

I just rented this, but it's the R-rated version, so obviously some things are going to be cut. So what will I miss that's in the NC-17 version but not the R version?
