I just got in from seeing this movie, and my mind, she is blown. Granted, River's "Ophelia in Space" shtick could grate from time to time, but this was a tight, exciting movie.
As for the Chinese dialog, it wasn't used as a "Evil Dr. FuManchu" reference, in this universe the US and China were the two main superpowers prior to humanity making its way to other planets.
I do find that the third act discovery in this movie very interesting as to what it implies about human nature, though.

I saw it on Friday. I really didn't get into it. There wasn't many people when I went to see it.
The raving about it...I don't understand. I liked the humor, but the fact that it's this great great movie....no. I recommend it be a rental.

Reading this thread, I'm humming that old Steve Martin song with the line
Criticize things you don't know about....
I was *not* a Firefly fan. I found the show uninvolving. But I loved the film. It's IMO much better than any of the Star Trek films, and rates comparison with the best of the genre.

I hope you're not implying that those of us who didn't see the movie shouldn't speak to our misgivings about it.

I saw the film and I also found it uninvolving, dull and absolutely boring. Whedon is a great writer? I didn't see it. And the film tanked...it seems that this supposedly huge cult fanbase isn't that big. Only 10 million made on its first weekend, and still no real hype outside the Whedon fan constituency... If all the fans were so intent on watching it on the first weekend, I guess there aren't that many fans. Next week a two star vehicles open, and with FlightPlan still doing great and A History Of Violence showing amazing per-screen-average, looks like theatres will start dropping Serenity soon to make way for other films perceived to be more mainstream.

Reading some other boards, it appears that there were numerous hardcore fans who went several times over the weekend, and others who are wondering if buying tickets on-line (whether or not they show up to the theater) would help boost sales! It would be interesting to find out how many of this opening weekend's ticket sales were actually repeat viewers hoping to boost the box office take. In their round-up of the weekend box office, Defamer posted this (parody) link to Joss's grocery list. Ouch!

I am suprised anyone could think that of Serenity. The vast majority of reviews have been very positive and having seen it I found it great. Still too early to say it's bombed. $10M opening weekend for a $40M Sci Fi movie is not terrible. If it takes $5M or less next weekend, that's bad. If it takes around $7-8M then that means good word of mouth and should do well the weekend after as well. And the per screen figures were very good, well ahead of Flightplan and only beaten by History Of Violence which opened in far fewer theatres.

Number 2 at the box office ain't tanking, yo. That means it did better than every other movie out there with the exception of one.
