I haven't seen this film discussed here yet. I loved it, more than I thought I would.
The cast was excellent but why wasn't Paul Giamatti nominated for an Oscar? I know he would have lost against Jaime anyways, but still I thought he deserved one. That scene where he was talking to his ex-wife on the phone was great.

I agree. I loved it in the theater, but after renting it this past week, I'm sure Giamatti was robbed. And it was Clint Eastwood doing the robbery.

Worst...movie...ever. I haven't gotten up and walked out of a film since I was 9 (Life with Mikey). I got in for free and still wanted my money back.

I also thought it was crap. Giamatti was robbed of nothing.
It was nothing more than a standard buddy movie - except instead of the strip club they went to Napa. I don't see how that suddenly makes it the best movie ever.

I liked parts of it and I thought Virginia Madsen was absolutely wonderful, but Best Picture? Not in my book.
I think Paul Giamatti is a good actor and frankly I would have put him on the nominee list over Jamie Foxx and maybe Johnny Depp. I thought the kid that played young Ray was more exciting than Jamie Foxx.

I loved it. I thought the writing was excellent- there were some great reversals, like when Paul Giamatti creeps into the waitress' house and hears her and her husband...well, I haven't figured out the spolier caps yet, so that's all I'll say. Or the way he ends up opening that bottle of wine. Some nice unexpected moments.
I'm not so sure about Best Actor, but I was really excited about the Screenplay Oscar.
I should note that I went in with no expectations, and people who saw it after it became really hyped seem to have been disappointed. I think it's one of those movies that has to quietly overtake you.

I thought is was a pretty good movie - not best picture material, but then, a lot of stuff that lands on that list doesn't deserve it.
I couldn't believe that Thomas Haden Church was nominated while Paul Giamatti was not. That was the true crime - they picked the wrong actor from that movie.

This movie did nothing for me, I didn't enjoy it. I thought everything about it was average at best and mostly boring. Maybe because the movie was so hyped with the critical acclaim and Oscar nods that I was expecting it to be the most amazing thing ever and so I was let down because my expectations were too high.

The critics made it sound funny...it so wasn't. Virginia Madsen was good, esp. on the porch scene when she's talking about why she likes wine. So I liked aproximately 5 minutes out of two hours or so of the movie; that was it!

I laughed til I cried during BOTH viewings. Maybe its an age thing? I'm over 30 and could relate to all that was going on.
