skim, I understand just exactly what you are saying. Just as it would be a travesty not to have the line "It's a far, far better thing that I do than I have ever done. It's a far, far better rest I go to than I have ever known. " in any movie adaptation of A TALE OF TWO CITIES just because it is synominous with the story, seeing a version of P&P without the "Fine eyes" line or some version of the Darcy "not in the mood to give consequence" which even the 1940 P&P had is frankly jarring. I would definitely rank the 1940 version of P&P with all its many faults ahead of this new version.

I was sick when they didn't do the hoop skirts and hats as they did in the Olivier version. Got to wonder what a costume shop charges for that stuff these days. I worked on a play building those kind of dresses, making ruffles for weeks. Needless to say they took over the stage when more than one lady was on.

I was a little surprised that they cut the "fine eyes" line (although apparently that was a euphamism for "quite a nice rack" and it is certainly true that Keira didn't have a pair of "fine eyes" in that sense) AND the "it is a truth universially acknowledged that a man in possession of a great fortune must be in want of a wife" (not sure if it is exact but you know what I mean)line. One of the best opening passages in history and they can't incorporate it into the screenplay? I really did like the movie but the screenplay didn't really take advantage of the excellent source material, imo.

I keep reading reports in the press about the ending being changed so that Amercians can have an extra helping of "schmaltz". At first, I thought, well good because I need to see Darcy and Lizzie kiss, damn it (although I will admit that the scene is sort of jarring and not very "Jane Austen")! Then, I read that there was a kiss in the British version that happened after Lizzie accepts Darcy's second proposal. See, if that is true, I am miffed that they added some unnecessary scene to the end and cut the post-proposal kiss. A kiss after the second proposal would have been fine by me and, I assume, most audience members - American or not.
I also read that some Jane Austen Society is upset at KK's posture and MacFadyen's unattractiveness. Meow!!!

Heh at the Jane Austen Society. Well even I'm upset about Keira's posture. You would think someone would've taught her to sit straight like a proper lady after all the period pieces she's done. And if you compare MacFadyen to Olivier(dark brooding sex) and Firth(extremely hot sex) he does leave something to be desired.

I'm in England and I didn't get to see any kissing whatsoever. I wasn't happy. The ending was such an anti-climax. They should have stuck a little kiss on the end and then rolled the credits; instead we get Donals Sutherland delivering the final lines for some unknown reason (much as I love DS, I felt the ending should be Lizzy and Darcy)

I dont really think it matters what happened at the ending. The first 110 minutes was not as good as the critics lead you to believe so it's a mute point.

Have not seen it, just saw a commercial for it, and all I could think was: "That? Ain't Darcy." Will reserve more bitchy judgement for after I have seen it

I thought MM was good-looking enough to be Darcy. I liked Colin Firth's Darcy but his skin and his pubic looking hair always detracted away from his looks for me.
