Agreed with everything you said Chameleon. Just like to add that they did a great disservice to Mr. Bingley making him almost an idiot, I never got that idea from the book. All the girls looked like they were copying the Katie Holmes hot mess hair style. And word to the grunginess of the house. I think you can be clean and middle class.
I'm so dissapointed that KK got an Oscar nod, what a waste.

I thought she was fantastic and totally deserving of a nod (Not a win, though)

Keira was significantly more deserving of the nod than Charlize and La Dench.
My heart stopped during the Lizzie/Darcy dance sequence.

I keep reading this about the movie and I wonder - what on earth do you think clean looked like back then? Bleach and Clorox weren't quite invented yet. I remember touring Mount Vernon (George Washington's home circa late 1700's) and thinking how small and dingy the place looked. Gorgous grounds though.
They didn't look like they were living in a poverty by any means. The house was a pretty good size, had large grounds, and they had a few servants as well. Neither Mrs. Bennett nor any of the girls had to work - all they did was entertain themselves (reading, sewing, walking, playing piano etc) and try to get married.
I thought the Bennett's house looked as clean any house back then would've with at least seven people living in it. I was even more surprised to learn from the dvd that the thing was a real house. Does anyone know what house that was and did they really film the whole thing inside of a real house? 'Cause if they did, that's awesome, usually for a movie they -would just shoot exterior shots on location and then try to replicate the rest on a soundstage.

My heart stopped during the Lizzie/Darcy dance sequence. Mine, too. I've never seen the mini-series, but I think I've become the reverse of the "BBC purists," because I don't want to--I just can't imagine Colin Firth as Darcy; I agree with what Keira said about MM's Darcy--that's he's so appealing because he's so big (physically) yet shows such vulnerability (emotionally). Colin Firth can seem sweet in a fumbling type of way to me (like in "Bridget Jones" or "Love Actually"), but that's about it...for me, at least, he doesn't have the same blend of charisma/sex appeal that I thought Matthew Macfadyen brought to the screen. I just bought the DVD today.

Oh, stargirl. I loved Matthew MacFadyen as Darcy, but you really are missing out if you refuse to see Colin Firth as Darcy. The mini-series and the movie are so different - I love them both and didn't even compare them while watching the movie - I would urge you to keep an open mind and watch the mini-series. It may not be your cup of tea, but it probably will change your opinions about what types of characters Colin Firth can play. I am proof that there is room for extreme love of both the new movie and the mini-series!
MM and CF are two very different Darcys. I never thought I would prefer another interpretation over Firth's controlled haughtiness, but I ended up really falling for MM's version of the character. A lot of his remoteness seemed to stem from potential awkwardness rather than pure snobbery. I loved that about his performance and am sad that KK got the lion's share of the praise. They were both instrumental in making the film so enjoyable and so different from the beloved mini-series.

There were times that I thought she was literally channeling Jennifer Ehle. I can't believe she got an Oscar nod. She wasn't awful or anything, just not particularly great. I thought I was the only one that saw this. I saw the movie first, then rented the series than watched the movie again, and I couldn't believe how much of Jennifer Ehle, KK had going on. The laugh, the way she spoke in that deep voice when trying to be funny, but to me, she could never convey the emotional range that Jennifer did.The only thing that I didn't like of Jennifer is that she looked more of a mature woman than a 20 yr old girl, and wasn't in line with Austen's heroine. KK was okay, I really liked her but her performance was not worth an Oscar nomination, and not even a Golden Globe if you ask me. As for Darcy, I prefer MM more than CF, although I love them both. Mathew did a great job at portraying the transformation of his character from an arrogant, stiff aristocrat who looks down on people who are beneath him (although his maid had an opposite tale of him growing up) to a compassionate man in love not caring of going against his family.CF did a great job too, is that I could feel more for Mathew's character. And those blue eyes had me completely thrown on his side! I completely disagree that Bingley was made out to look like an idiot. His character was charming but very naive, dominated by his sisters or Darcy at times and with an enthusiastic love for Jane and I saw it all. He was just as cute as I imagined him to be,much more than in the miniseries, they both were him and Jane. I couldn't get into the *beautiful* Jane of the miniseries who was so plain and ugly!I thought Jane was the most gorgeous girl of the family and in both versions Lizzie was better looking. I love love this movie, probably more so than the miniseries.

Well, sometime (when I've got 5 or 6 hours with nothing to do!) I'll have to try the miniseries. Till then I'll take your word for it that Colin Firth measures up playing Darcy, ThursdayNext!
I thought Bingley's character in the movie was very similar to how Austen portrayed him in the book; just like you've described so well, plush.

I actually laughed when KK was doing the crying scene, left the room, and then tried to come back to deliever the bad news about her sister. That scene was so badly acted on her part. Her nom probably came because it's jane austin and it made money.
