They missed out the whole of the last chapter. No wedding, no cute discussions between Lizzy and Darcy, nothing. Feel ripped off.
Plus, they totally messed about with the dialogue in Darcy's proposals. As if some boardroom bigwig could write it any better than Austen did.
You'd think it would be relatively easy to stick to such a brilliant story, but no.
PS Keira wasn't as painful as I thought she would be, but her strangely inane giggling at random points in the film did grate a bit.

I've seen several versions of P&P and only the A&E version actually had a wedding.
The book ends very generally, talking about Mrs. Bennet being happy on the day when she got rid of her two daughters. That's really all there is about the wedding at all.
The last chapter is rather general, talking about how long the Bingleys stayed in the area, and who was welcomed (or not) at Pemberley, etc, mentioning Lady Catherine and the Gardiners.
I am sorry to hear that the Gardiners' roles are reduced in the film as I really liked their characters.

I could get used to the idea of the movie cutting off after Darcy's last proposal, but screwing his proposals up? Blasphemy. Utter blasphemy.

I agree. That was one of my favorite parts in the whole book.

I've never read the book nor seen any of the adaptations. Don't ask how I missed reading it 'cause I read tons of books. I should probably be off to Amazon to find a used copy.
But I thought the trailer looked good and I'm usually not one for these type of period pieces.

This version takes place about thirty years after or something like that. Some period fashion geek on ye old forum remarked that they might have changed the date because Keira Knightley's small breasts wouldn't look good in Regency clothes, which really highlight the bosom. That's untrue. Gwyneth Paltrow's small breasts looked smashing in her empire gowns in EMMA. . . . and I am no Paltrow fan. I can only think that the people who like the Gavarnie version more is because that adaptation is closer to the book. It is also more static and stagey. IMO, it is definitely not better than the 1995 version

Thanks, bastinado! I really don't see how it could be better (the 1995 BBC production is pretty much it so far as I'm concerned), but I did wonder. I think the only improvement they could make is by not having Adrian Lukis in it. I don't think he was good looking enough for Wickham.

I'm hearing tons of oscar buzz on Keira's role. Anyone think she has any real chances or is this just more promo for the movie?

In the US, I haven't heard much about her performance being Oscar-worthy, but she is a star on the rise and might get a "validation" nomination (like Winona Ryder or Natalie Portman) to show that TPTB were right to promote her like she was the next best thing.
The previews make me think the movie - dirt and grime notwithstanding - is more on the same level as Emma (good movie, lovely performances but not really Oscar-worthy) rather than Sense and Sensibility (great movie, great performances, definitely Oscar-worthy). My prediction is that KK gets good reviews (and puts some shine on her tarnishing star status) and perhaps a Golden Globe nomination but no Oscar nom and no serious Oscar buzz.

That's untrue. Gwyneth Paltrow's small breasts looked smashing in her empire gowns in EMMA. . . . and I am no Paltrow fan. We'll have to agree to disagree on this one. I think Gwyneth is pretty and did look nice in the movie, but her figure looked like Wendy Darling's. I haven't heard or seen any promotion for this movie. Granted I haven't been paying much attention to Hollywood lately, but I'm wondering if this will be another Domino and slide under the radar of the general public. I know Keira has been toted as the next big thing for quite a while now, but I don't think she has the star power to draw people in.
