I love old movies and I was surprised and delighted to find out that they will FINALLY be releasing "The High and the Mighty" on DVD, come August 2, 2005.
This movie has been tied up legally for years and never even made it to video at all. But, quite by chance, I discovered this week that it's being released.
John Wayne is the star, but it's not a typical John Wayne movie. It's really the grand-daddy of all those "trouble on an airplane" movies.
The story concerns a flight (propeller plane, not jet) from Hawaii to San Francisco where the plane develops trouble about halfway across and may be forced to ditch. Wayne is the old co-pilot, demoted from previous pilot status, and Robert Stack is the pilot. The stories of the people on board (probably 24-25 passengers) are revealed, why they're making the trip, and how the danger changes their view of life, as the passengers pitch in to try to help. Among some of the other actors are Claire Trevor, Lorraine Day, Phil Harris, and some others that you've seen many times before, but whose names are not as well known.
I really loved this movie and remember seeing it on TV long ago. Dimitri Tiomkin won Best Score Oscar for the great theme.
Also a great ending.
