The first time I saw it, I thought it was okay. I didn't understand all the commotion. I recently watched it again with my sister and we were both laughing. I didn't watch the final wedding scene the first time I watched it and when we did watch it, we were both laughing so much! Now I think it's better than okay, but not the funniest movie ever.
My question is what year is it supposed to be? He has a trapper keeper, but the brother is on the internet? The girl keeps her bracelets in Caboodles? The cousin/uncle, I forgot which one, has a cell phone? Is it supposed to be present day, but the town is stuck in the 80's? Did I miss something?
Please help. It's been bugging me since I first watched it! Thank you!

I know this is from MANY months ago, but that is exactly my surmation. That the film takes place in modern times, but that the town and the people are firmly trapped in the 80's. I grew up in a big city but have since moved to a small town and when I first did, there was a bit of a time warp that happened. Even when I travel back and forth to meet with friends in my hometown, then come back to my current town- this town always seems a decade or two behind the city folks. People using cell phones and laptops are wearing giant 80's poof bangs and leg warmers. It happens.
P.S. more on topic. I took my godson (who's six) and his friend who's about 11 to the zoo this past weekend and they were both asking at every turn if the zoo had a liger. Heh!

I watched this last week and thought it was pretty good.
Pedro and his cousins were one of my favorite things about the movie. That and the scene with the cow and the kids on the bus. I nearly peed myself there.

Me an' Mr. Wolf saw this together (me the second time, him the first)
I gotta say, I only got it watching it with someone else...so we could bounce lines and stuff off of each other.
We still say to each other "Pedro offers you his protection".

Yeah, it's supposed to be present day. If you watch the opening credits, you see Napoleon's school ID and it says 2004-05 school year on it.
That being said, I *heart* this movie. It's one I don't get sick of watching, and I've made several people watch it, and they ended up loving it. It's just so quotable. Although my friends and I use the "tots" quotes more.
"Are you going to eat your tots?"
