Violet's mother is played by Missi Pyle. Ah, I remember her from the Specter scenes in Big Fish. And she was in the country club bathroom fight scene with Queen Latifah in Bringin' Down the House. Good casting. That would certainly do it!

That's where I know him from! I thought he looked like the butt-monster, but I wasn't sure it was him.
And I agree Missi Pyle was great - she seems to be one of Burton's new muses, since he keeps casting her. Helena Bonham Carter may want to watch out - that seems to be his pattern. First it was Lisa Marie (casting her in all his movies and dating her), then Helena, and now Missi - except for the dating part. So far. Although using that criteria, maybe Johnny Depp is the one she should really worry about...

Missi Pyle was also the female alien in Galaxy Quest, in which she did the same super-open eyes expression. She played it much more normal in the episode of "Friends" where Ross overwhitened his teeth and she turned on the black lights.
Boy, she's become quite the H!ITG! hasn't she?

Da kids and I saw it this week and I was very happy with it. I was one of those they questioned why remake it, so I was pleasantly suprised. We were laughing out loud at the right times, always a good indicator IMHO. Snarky Grandpa had the best lines, but for some reason when Wonka said "Oh, excuse me I was having a flashback." I couldn't stop laughing. When the dolls exploded and started melting we were cracking up, until we noticed no one else in the theatre was laughing.
Please, someone else tell me they thought that was funny, or does my family need therapy?

Don't worry, pathtaken my sister and I couldn't stop laughing at that part. No one else in our theatre laughed either though. Strange.
I loved the part where Grampa Joe told Charlie that Augustus would be fine, then got this really "that boy is dead" look on his face behind Charlie's back. My sister and I have also gone around doing the Cannibalism speech a lot. Hilarious.

I loved it, plain and simple. Johnny's performance was great, Ebert's criticism is baseless and silly.

That was my absolute favorite line of the movie. And I loved the "Oh, Okaaay..." look on the dad's face.
The people in the theater I was at were cracking up at the exploding puppets. It got even funnier when they passed the burn ward.
This is one I am definitely picking up on DVD.

I saw this movie twice (once alone and once with a friend), and there was applause in the theatre both times. I thought it was fabulous, and Johnny Depp is definitely a genius. The only complaint I have is that I didn't like all the Oompa Loompas being played by one guy. Especially one guy who reminds me of a particularly nasty X-Files.
I totally laughed at the burning puppets too, although I thought Willy Wonka getting so inappropriately into the Oompa Loompa songs was the highlight of the movie for me.

Loved it! Loved it! Loved it!
Johnny Depp was excellent. I'll admit I was a little worried going in - some of the trailers and still shots of him just looked wrong. However, it's a performance you have to see to completely get and it worked on so many levels. And I may be in the minority on this one, but I would totally do Johnny as Wonka. I found him strangly appealing.
I loved the scene at the beginning with the dolls - I nearly lost it when Wonka said that if he sat in the chair then he wouldn't be able to see the show. He had some really great lines.
I didn't think it was possible for a child to have bigger eyes than Dakota Fanning but that little girl who played Violet is giving her a run for her money.
I really want to see this again.

Don't worry, my husband and I laughed our asses off at that part. In fact, we were laughing so much that I'm not sure if we were the only ones laughing or not.
Hee. And when he said something like, "That's...relatively new."
I wasn't too happy with all the added backstory about Wonka's father, and the way they ended the movie. However, I do acknowledge that the book itself doesn't have a very climactic ending, since it really just leads right into Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator. I prefer this ending to the other version in which they destroy Charlie's integrity with the stupid Fizzy Lifting Drinks (not that I don't love that movie too, aside from the ending).
