Just from the few very brief promos I've seen, he looks and acts like a cross between Michael Jackson and Edward Scissorhands. I'm not sure if the JD love can carry me through 2 hours of that kind of performance.

Johnny is freaking me out w/ the waxy skin and the teeth. Makes me long for Gene Wilder.

Yeah, the character design is all wrong. He looks like a prissy middle-aged woman. Whose great idea was that?

I don't give a damn what he looks like. I'm a Johnny fan forever and I will see this film to see his performance.

I don't think it looks too bad. I'm definitely intrigued as to how he'll play it, and I think Johnny's a good enough actor that he might be able to pull it off.
I do enjoy the original film though (except for Grandpa and his malingering), so I hope it's as good as that.

I thought everything (with the exception of Gene Wilder) about the original film sucked. The god awful set, acting, songs, fizzy lifting drinks - I could go on and on. It's a really shitty movie that benefited greatly from good source material.
I'm not completely sold on Johnny Depp's Wonka yet - a little too Michael Jackson like but I'm kinda taking a "lets wait and see" approach. It's one of those things that will either really work or really fall apart.

I'm not the biggest fan of the original, and I want to see how this turns out. I guess we'll see when the reviews start to come in.
Johnny Depp's Wonka is awfully...strange. I never pictured Wonka that feminine. But, Wonka is a weirdo and Johnny loves to play weirdos, so I may go just to watch Johnny have fun. He absolutely made "Pirates of the Caribbean" so I'll see if he can make this one too.

I am so excited to see this! I heard that Tim Burton wanted to make this version darker than the original. So that could be why Johnny's Wonka is going to be a strange character. As kostgard pointed out, Wonka is a weirdo. He's supposed to act weird! He's a guy who lives in a factory with all this weird shit in it.

The child actor who plays Charlie looks very familiar (although I'm not sure from where) and also, regrettably, annoying for some reason. This version looks like it'll be straight from the book, unlike the original. I'm guessing it's really aimed for kids, which wasn't necessarily the case with the original. So I'll wait and see what the word of mouth is--I don't usually agree with the reviewers.

Charlie is played by Freddie Highmore who played Peter in Finding Neverland. Johnny Depp was so impressed with him he pressed Burton to cast him.
