This is the only movie I've been looking forward to see this summer. The only thing that will keep me from it is if Johnny Depp suddenly converts to Scientology and starts engaging in closed-mouth, public make out sessions with his girlfriend.

If you have read the books Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator, and James and the Giant Peach, they are pretty bleak and depressing, despite the cheerful themes. I think Tim Burton is absolutely the perfect director to truly capture the dual nature of these stories. A Series of Unfortunate Events books kind of remind me of the optimistic misery that Dahl's characters possessed. The story itself is so quirky that it is tailor made for Burton. As much as I love and cherish Gene Wilder's Wonka, if there is any actor in the world that could trump him, it is Johnny Depp. And I'm not just saying that because he is my next husband and father of my next 3 kids. Edited because I got [ quote] happy, and the preview button is a GOOD thing.

As Johnny is THE LOVE OF MY LIFE (sorry Benicio) I will trust him. I was horrified when I heard he had sold out and was doing a friggin Disney movie and didn't he just show me. As for Mr. Oompa-loompa[/color] well I am having a little trouble with him. I would like to add that Moldy should have to sit through 6 Tom Cruise movies(You can start with Magnolia) in a row for saying Johnny Depp, gay and lame in the same paragraph.

Oh Moldy you are so funny and so very Canadian. I was seeing if you would ban me for being a smarty pants like they would of at that other place not to be named. I was going to beg your forgiveness. Or go buy a new computer and register under a different name.
I think Johnny looks kind of creepy as Willy Wonka too. He makes his voice sound wierd too but I still love him. Why does he do this on purpose when he can be so hot, hot, hot. I will be there to see him on opening night.

I was really looking forward to the movie until I saw the preview. I get the feeling that it's going to suck even with Johnny Depp. I find his Willy Wonka positively frightening. (And I love Johnny Depp) No man should have a pageboy haircut. Who else remembers the rumors that Marilyn Manson was going to play wonka? I see an uncanny resemblance.

The latest tv commercial has more scenes in it ,and none look entertaining. Aren't you supposed to use good stuff to intrigue peoples? The voice/accent Depp has chosen is puzzling, doesn't seem to go with Wonka to me.
The song loop "Willy Wonka, Willy Wonka etc etc" makes me want to rip my ears from my head and flush em.

The original book itself was wierd and disturbing when I first read it (age 12), and when I read it again just recently. Despite the fact that it is wierd and disturbing, it IS a good story, in a wierd and disturbing way. ;D
So, like I said before, it's kind of tailor made for Burton/Depp. I think they will both do a good job of it, and it will be one of those films that people absolutely love, or absolutely hate.
I like the freaky accent and the freaky little song. It seems to fit well with the semi-scary/bizarre book I remember.

Why did they make him look like Anna Wintour? That's just wrong.

Johnny's Wonka looks like just Anna Wintour! Either that or somebody's very manly-looking old auntie.
I am really, really over Tim Burton's "I'm the quirkiest quirk who ever quirked" act. Like all of his movies, this one has that "trying too hard to be dark and weird" vibe that really turns me off. Also, I saw a preview where Wonka says, "Please don't touch the squirrel's nuts!"-ugh, toilet humor.
I won't see it in theaters. However, I might rent it eventually, just to see how it compares to the original. There's no way it could be more disturbing. Gene Wilder's Willy Wonka came off like a serial killer, what with his emotionless attitude and the things he said. (Not to say it wasn't a good performance of Wilder's-actually, it was very good, I think. Just disturbing.)

I can't wait to see this movie. It looks far from 'gay'
