The previews aren't doing anything for me. But it looks like Johnny is taking another huge risk with this character, the way he had the suits sh*tting their pants during filming for PoTC when they were expecting an "aaaarrrrgh! mateys!" Jack Sparrow and they got a "mind the goods, luv" Jack Sparrow. I gotta give credit to actors who go out on a limb. Sometimes it works, sometimes you fall on your face.

I agree with Duke of URL. I recall people being skeptical upon hearing he was basing his Jack Sparrow on Keith Richards, but look what happened. So I'm just hoping he can pull off the same thing with his very own Willie Wonka.
But I just don't get the voice, or what it's supposed to be... Is it some sort of accent? The little bits I've seen, it comes off as disturbingly Michael Jackson-esque. And the teeth and hair are scary. But I'm trying to have faith that he knows what he's doing.

I love me some Johnny Depp and have never seen him in anything where I haven't like him (I haven't seen all of his movies, though). But this? In the previews I've seen something's just very off with his characterization. It almost seems like he's trying too hard. With the previews for PotC, he had me at "That's interesting". With the previews for CatCF, he lost me at "Chewing Gum is really gross. Chewing Gum I hate the most!" As loopy as he made Jack Sparrow, he also completely embraced the loopy and brought that character to life. In this, he looks and acts almost like he's CGI. There just doesn't seem to be any life there. The rest of the movie looks wild and wacky and it looks like they picked some great kid actors. (A VERY difficult task!) But Depp seems very.... well off. I know that the character of Willy Wonka is supposed to be 'off' but Depp just seems off in his offness, if that makes any sense. And it's hard for me to say that, because I truely loves me some Johnny and would pay to watch him read from a phone book. Heck, I'd probably pay to watch him just sit next to someone else reading from a phone book. But I'm not sure if I'll pay to see him do more of what I've seen in these previews

Hee! Perhaps you will join me and my gang, Mares, because that is exactly how we plan to see the movie.

Saw the trailer last night. I cringed the entire time. Crazy Michael Jackson , INDEED. I will probably see it though, for curiosity's sake.
I love the original movie, even though that is a semi-unpopular opinion around here. I like the singing ok? And even though Gene Wilder is apparently kind of a jerk in real life, I love him as Wonka. So.....all I'm saying is, I am as of yet not convinced on this one and am leaning more towards totally squicked out by the whole image of Johnny Depp, that skin, those clothes, and those frightening teeth caps.

I didn't realize it was an unpopular opinion to love the first movie because I absolutely adore the original (with the exception of the suckass "Cheer up Charlie" song- but that's what the Fast Forward button is for)
It's really one of my all time faves and when I saw it again as an adult, I realized how much of my life's philosophy and personality had been shaped by the movie (and to a greater extent- the book)
All that said, I didn't consider the movie untouchable. I'm usually leery of remakes, but early on when I'd heard that Burton and Depp would be involved, I actually got pretty excited to see what they would do. Now that the previews have come out- I've gone back into leery mode.
Depp's Wonka is just freaking me out too much. That and I'm disappointed that they've apparently only used one actor for the Oompa Loompa and CGI'ed him to multiply. There are PLENTY of super talented little people actors out there who could have filled the multiple roles (Peter Dinklage immediately springs to mind as well as Warwick Davis who's gotta be tired of the Leprechan franchise by now. Plus, Depp couldn't have hooked up Marty Klebba after his PotC role?) Deep Roy rocks for sure, but he could have rocked in an ensemble.
Then again, I'm pretty anti-CGI as it is.
I dunno. I probably shouldn't judge a movie by it's preview- but I'm finding the Preview to be such a turn off. (And Johnny Depp isn't even jumping on couches, assulting us with public displays of affection or chanting "L. Ron Hubbard Rules!")

There is something completely offputting about Johnny's Wonka (That sounds kinda dirty doesn't it?). I know Wonka is supposed to be strange, but I guess it's the CEMJ thing that makes me want to scream when I see pics and previews of this movie.

I noticed that this movie is also being released on IMAX screens in addition to regular screens - isn't it crazy-expensive to transfer a movie to IMAX film?
I've noticed that some movies come out on IMAX after their regular release (like the latest Harry Potter movie) so it seems a vote of confidence from the studio that they are making the IMAX investment right from the get-go.
Either way, I like watching Johnny have fun with a character, so I will see this one.

The trouble I have with this movie is that in the book, Wonka loves kids in a totally non-sexual way.
Whoever they have playing Wonka now, did not read the book at all, and should not have been allowed to make the movie until he did. Because he's playing Wonka as a child-hater.
Sorry, I'm just bitter because Hollyweird is always messing up my favorite books, then people look at me like I'm a freak for liking the book in the first place.
