I saw WSS and I was like "This is Mrs Rochester's story?! Which one, not the one from Jane Eyre."

Ciaran Hinds/Samantha Morton is also my favorite. I thought he was teh sexy and I really think Samantha Morton is talented. She did a great job. Wasn't Elle McPhereson in that one?
WSS was a strange movie, but I liked it. I really felt sorry for the ole Missus. NP is hot.

Elle was in the Charlotte/William version.
I like Samantha Morton best as Jane Eyre, but I generally find Ciaran Hings faintly ridiculous. I suppose the ideal Rochester thus far looked like Orson Welles and acted like Timothy Dalton.
I am looking forward to see how Toby Stephens goes. He's exactly the right age.

Toby Stephens rawks!! It's the 3rd and penultimate episode tonight and i am fucking loving it, and it's not even one of my fave books. The chemistry is amazing, Toby is sexy enough for u to be involved as Rochester but not too pretty boy as to be uncredible. Ditto Ruth Wilson is in some ways extremely pretty which is enough to get u invested in the romance (or me anyway shallow creature that i am) but not in a classical way for the time, so all the references about her lack of looks also ring true. So the best of all worlds, physically. They also have fabulous chemsirty and great acting, and while it has it's dark elements, it's not... desolate... which i feel the other adaptations ahve been (not that i think i've ever watched them the whole way thorugh). At the end of the hour i'm not ready for it to end and wished the next ep would come straight away, which is not a feeling i associate with JE.

I'm also loving the new T.V. one. Ruth Wilson has a strange face - she's certainly plain enough for it to feel horribly realistic that people keep calling her plain, but she has a hugely attractive face in the sense that you just can't stop looking at it.
I read a review which noted that the best thing Ruth Wilson does in her much lauded performance is that she does very little - and it's true, she's so still and composed and mysterious. No wonder Rochester is fascinated by her - I am too.
I don't normally have much time for these sorts of mini-series, but I'm enthralled by this one. They judged it very well - it's very dark.
Last night when she s.l.o.w.l.y. took off her wedding dress and put on her horrible old governesses dress again without crying or saying a single word......heartbreaking.

The BBC's version has me enthralled as well. And it has mostly to do with Ruth Wilson, her portrayal of Jane is so apt and her face while it's plain enough, she's quite pretty at the same time.
Definitely well made, I'm not sure I'd want it to end next week!

Only complaint is Mrs R didn't look quite ravaged enough bearing in mind she;d been in solitary (doubt Grace Poole made for much company) captivity and mad for so many years ha ha!
Usually in film/tv i tend to have a lot of sympathy with the men who seem like bigger people, and less for the women (i AM a woman tho before anyone accuses me of being sexist) who seem petty (Xander/Buffy, Chandler/Monica, Sharpe/Jane) and usually think the guy in question is too good for her, but in this case it's entirely equal and it makes for a great viewing experience - to think that both of the couple completely deserve eachother (and to mean that in the good way!).
It's a pleasant surprise to see Timothy Dalton's acting favourably compared with Orson Welles upthread, as i've always thought the latter was overrated and the former underrated.
I also don't want it to end next week! And i never thought i'd say that about the bleak 'Jane Eyre' story - i only started watching out of loyalty to Toby! Btw has anyone hear seen the Camomile Lawn? It;s funny to think of Mr Rochester being hopelessly in love/lust with Lizzie Bennett (Jennifer Ehle).

Reviving this because I just saw the 2011 version of Jane Eyre. Although I love the book and have read it dozens of times I haven't been able to bring myself to see a film version of the story until I was lured into seeing this one by the appearance of Michael Fassbender. Fassbender is way too pretty to be Rochester. When he asked Jane if she thought him handsome I almost expected her to say, "oh hell yeah"

Apparently Fassbender was hired on his acting merits, in spite of not having the "right look". I had my reservations about Mia Wasikowska but thought she was fantastic, very expressive yet reserved. I loved this film (although I agree that Orson Welles was a better physical fit for the part of Rochester) and I've watched it a few times now.

I was lured into this film because of Fassbender, even though I'd seen so many previous versions and wasn't itching to see another one. (Thank God Fassy will probably never do Hamlet because I have taken a vow not to see that one every again.) He really exceeded my expectations and did a great Rochester. But yeah, the part about her not finding him attractive and vice versa was the part that didn't ring true.
After watching it a few times (actually, watching the second half....the first part I'm happy to fast forward through) I really like the score too.
