I should give this a spin. I actually loved Wide Sargasso Sea! The book, can't remember the movie. I just really liked the idea of the other side of the story. I am determined to get into some old fashioned lit this summer- in the books forum I wrote about trying out Jane Austen again. I think I am old enough now and less impatient to try to view it through my more mature eyes, I'm not all riot grrrled out like I was in my fem lit class in the 90s.

I love the most recent adaptation with Fassbendr, Dench, and Wasikowska. My Fassy love knows no bounds, so I felt he was too attractive to be Rochester looks wise, but damn if he was not a fantastic Mr. Rochester. My only complaint was the rather abrupt ending. I read the book, so I know what happens, but it was still odd the way the movie ended.
I am also a big fan of the 2007 BBC Miniseries version with Ruth Wilson and Toby Stephens.
As for the story of Jane Eyre, I like the book, but I definitely prefer the various adaptions to the book, which is rare for me.

As for the story of Jane Eyre, I like the book, but I definitely prefer the various adaptions to the book, which is rare for me. I finally caught the Fassy version on HBO the other day and I agree. He definitely brought the brooding, and this adaptation stands out because it dealt more with her finding her Rivers cousins, which IIRC is a major plot development often cut or scaled-down from adaptations. I didn't think St John was as obsessed with sin in the book as he was in the movie--I've always thought Jane decided not to marry him and be a missionary's wife just because didn't want to, and wasn't into St John like that, not because St John was a total fire and brimstone guy. She even liked and admired him, she just didn't want to marry him and be his helpmeet all the way in India, but still. I'll have to compare the Charlotte Gainsbourg (my favorite Jane, so far, although I really like Mia was well) and some of the others to refresh. Young Anna Paquin is also adorbs as young Jane. About the ending for the Fassbender-Wasikowska version, I actually rather liked it for the same reasons that I like the inclusion of the cousins. Most versions end with the baby and marriage, but this one stopped just short, which was kind of refreshing. I was all, "'large, brilliant and'--hey, wtf? Oh, ok." It's not necessarily my favorite, but I appreciate this version. ETA: Yay! It's on right now, and I'll revise my opinion--I think the screenwriter did get the tone of the "I'll got to India but not as your wife" dialogue just right. I missed it before, and was under the impression St. John was all hot and bothered for no reason whatsoever.

The director said he didn't want to include the epilogue because he didn't like it.He also said he didn't want to do a typical Hollywood ending and wanted to leave people wondering a little about what happens next. I get what he was going for and that sort of ending is popular these days but I think in this case an ending that was a little more traditional may have worked better. Not that I think he needed to include the epilogue. You can get the gist of where things are going without it but the way this ending was done didn't quite work for me.

I just saw this yesterday and I agree. I read the book so I know what happens and I really didn't get why they didn't include the last chapter in the movie. I would have preferred that over the St John nonsense, to me that was just fucking boring. St John seemed like such a douche.
On the funny side, I was listening to the director's commentary and he said that the horse that MF was riding when Rochester first meets Jane, got an erection every time MF got on the horse; so the director says something like, MF's sexual prowess extends to the animal kingdom as well.
