Well now I have a dilemma. I have the special edition DVDs already and I don't know if I should bother with the new set. On the other hand, the special edition DVDs were a gift so it wasn't really my money that paid for them.

Are they going to be released separately or all together? I would buy RoTJ so I could have the original ending (and the original "Ewok Celebration"--we had that record!).

I hope they will be released separately. The 1977 Star Wars was the only film of the series that I tolerated. I was one of the very, very very few people who thought there should not be a sequel. I felt kind of cheated that I had to buy the DVD box set.
I should bring this topic over to Unpopular Movies Opinions but this one was here. I still might.

I guess it's an unpopular opinion but I didn't mind the special editions. I even liked Hayden Christensen at the end of Jedi because it honored continuity. Keeping that same guy in there would have looked dumb. But for those fans who hated the first three films, I guess it's preferable that way.
Lucas is such a greedy idiot. Didn't he say once that he would never release the original versions? He may say he's doing this for the fans but all he sees is dollar signs.

I don't mind the special editions either. Of course I wasn't born yet when New Hope and Empire came out, and was only 1 when Jedi came out. I didn't see them until high school, which was when the special editions came out so I wasn't able to form a strong attachment to the originals. Although I must say as one of the few who loves the Ewoks I missed the original celebration from the end of Jedi.

The Ewok Celebration record was totally, totally awesome. It's all ewoks "singing", and my brothers and I made up words. I have no idea what the words were supposed to be, but it was Ewokese or something. "Mlok mlok, mo leek moo lok lok. Chokee chokee chokee...." I don't know! It's making me laugh just thinking about it. The best part was in the middle when someone who sounded like C3PO was rapping in some non-language, with character names thrown in for fun. "Blah blah blah blah Master Luke....ookazana Princess Leia." It was even more fun to turn the speed down to 33 RPM during the rap. Hee hee!
The B-side? "Lapti Nek." WTF?

I knew this day was coming...and why not?
If there's money to be made, Lucasfilms is just as bad as Disney. It just doesn't have as many truly "bankable" properties.
Me? I'm thrilled. Lucas shouldna touched it. He was blessed with the adulation of fans the world over for 20 years for the work he did. Why did he need to change it? [/rhetorical]
I mean, really, if your dinky film (don't get me wrong, I liked it, and if in GL's perception it was dinky, he's got issues...he singlehandedly created one of the best opening sequences in movie history...the rush of the Tantive IV (?) onscreen...incredible) made that big and impression, it means it did something RIGHT. Why change it?

For the people that already have the SEs, those versions will be included on the new DVDs, so no reason not to trade up. Though I don't think the 4-Disc in the Box Set will be included, but I'm not too sure.
Like some here, I first saw the SEs as well, given my age. Went to all the theatrical rereleases with my friends in high school. But then I got the original editions on VHS (remember that?!) or something. I am not nearly enough of a fan to freak out about specific changes (since I never knew the diff) yet I have a MAJOR problem with the new editions - namely, that no matter how much Lucas tried to make it seemless, the new special effects are really jarring and stick out like sore thumbs. Sorry, CGI Jabba? Completely disconcerting.
I do think Lucas is kinda a hack, given that Empire is much better written/directed than any one of the films he's done. And I can't help but imagine what Jedi would've been like under David Lynch (the original director). Would've been intense & very different, to say the least.

So will there be a big huge special boxed set with all 6 films in it? Lucas would be crazy to pass on that.
