I have the old school tapes (before the cool remastering done in the mid 1990s) and I plan on buying the old versions on dvd. I liked having the chance to see the films in the theatre (well, I saw Jedi in the theatre but I was, like, 3) but I hated all of the additions. I could never figure out what Lucas was trying to do with all of the extra footage and CGI stuff. It isn't like it made any of the films better and, imo, only served to make the original effects look extra-stupid. Man, I love Muppets and wish Lucas hadn't turned his back on them - I wish Frank Oz had refused to voice Yoda in the prequels out of anger or something - ok, not really, but I still prefer 3-D creatures do CGI ones, no matter how real they look.
There is a ramshackle quality to the original films - they are cheesy, over the top, not incredibly well acted, and they have primitive special effects but they are effective and involving (thank god for Han Solo). They work almost in spite of themselves and Lucas should NOT have messed with that.

I used to listen to that on endless repeat when I was 12. I sang along with Sy Snootles. You may now make fun of me.

My brother and I used to do dramatic reenactments of that scene where Lapti Nek is played. I was the slave girl with the tentacles on her head (Oola?)and he was Jabba and he pulled on my chains while laughing in a sinister manner, then he sent me to my doom in the cage of the Rancor. It ruled.

Damn my cursed weakness for giving in and buying the Special Edition DVDs!!! Now I'll have to give Uncle Georgie more money so I can have Han shooting first/Yub Nub song/Not-Hayden Christensen at the end of RoTJ.
Still...I'll be very happy to have the original versions on (a not-bootlegged-from-Laser-Disc-and-bought-on-eBay) DVD.
ITA. I saw Empire at a special screening about a year ago. Irvin Kershner was there for a Q&A after the movie and basically said the same thing. The entire audience applauded. Frank Oz rules!
