Looked, and couldn't find a thread on this movie.
I saw it last night with three kids aged 12, 15 and 16 - kinda old for a "kids' movie" but we all loved it. It's probably one of the most entertaining animated movies I've seen in years. It's not little kid-dish at all. There sure are a lot of animated movies out this year, but this one has the Oscar buzz, and I can see why.
The best part is that the characters are so real in their mannerisms, conversations and actions. They act like real 12-year-olds, not wise-cracking tv kids. The teen babysitter and her boyfriend were also realistic. The cops were stereotypes, but they had my two older kids falling over with laughter.
Plus, it's a fun story. Highly recommend it. Anyone else see it?

Huh. I took my kids last week and we all thought it was a big steaming pile of poo. Seriously, one of the worst-written scripts I've ever heard.
The animation sequences were lovely, as was the direction, but the dialogue and plot were TERRIBLE. Just very, very bad. I'm mad that I spent even matinee prices to go and see it.
Your mileage may vary, indeed! ;D

Wow. Really? How old are your kids? What was the reaction of others in the theatre?
Everyone is the theatre with us reacted as we did, as far as I could see/hear. It also got great reviews. I'm really surprised by your assessment.

My kids are 10, 8, and 6. My ten year old daughter and her friend both commented that the way the kids talked was stupid [sic]. I don't know about other people in the theater, but my mom and I were rolling our eyes about 20 minutes in and it just got worse from there.
The entire theater cleared out immediately after the film, which I thought was kind of odd, but I don't know what that says about their reactions to the film.
Well, whatever. We just didn't like the film at. all. I'm glad that you and your family had a good time, though Mugsy. ;D

My boyfriend and I were surprised by this movie. It didn't seem kid-friendly at all. He was constantly commenting throughout the scarier scenes, "this is a kids' movie?!" Seemed a little... intense for young kids. 10+ would probably be fine.

Seemed a little... intense for young kids. 10+ would probably be fine. That was my thought too. I took my 6 & 8 year old girls to see it and while they were ok with some of the scarier stuff, they did appreciate Mommy holding their hands during them. I feel sorry for the little girl sitting next to us. I looked over at her at one point (her mom murmuring at her distracted me) and saw she was quietly crying. Poor thing! But to her credit, her mom apparently convinced her to stick it out and she did, though sitting in her mom's lap.

I saw this yesterday with my kids 13, 9 and 2 four year olds. I thought it was WAY too scary for my 4 year olds and would have liked a warning. They sat on my lap and had nightmares last night. My older kids loved it. I didn't. I thought it was a really mean-spirited script with little redeeming value. It was funny in parts and I liked the animation, but I thought it was badly written and mean.
Plus, I really wanted to know what happened to the cops and the dog. I was really disappointed in this movie.

What kind of rating did this movie have? PG13? G?
ernestine, the cops and the dog were spit out by the house after it "died." I believe it happened during or after the credits. The scuzzy boyfriend and his kite were okay, too.

You have to stay for the first part of the credits (I think the red lettered ones) to see a bit of post-movie.
I always figured that if a kids' movie was rated PG, it was probably too intense for preschoolers or sensitive types. Your basic harmless kids' movie would be rated G or F (for family).

My son (6 years old today) is pretty good about not being scared by movies. For example, he saw the last two Harry Potter movies in the theater, and didn't really get freaked out. After seeing this movie, though, he couldn't sleep that night. It was definitely more intense than we were expecting, even with a PG rating. He ended up watching the last third or so of the movie from Daddy's lap. I thought it was an OK movie, but not something I'd rush out to buy on DVD or anything.
