Hmm - I never thought about the Egoyan comparison but it does make sense in a way.
A lot of reviews pointed out the fact that this is Coulter's first feature - which could explain why the plotting and pacing was so "off." He just doesn't know how to "shape" a picture yet versus an hour of television. Working in TV, especially HBO, just has a different dramatic "shape" to directing.
On a related note - I *hate* how the blurring of TV and movies has forced every film to seemingly be nothing but close-ups and over-the-shoulder two-shots. It's just so dull and boring to watch and you should *use* a close up for a point.
