Matt Dillon does a great job and really carries this film. The Henry character must have been very difficult to portray since so much of what's going on with him remains under the surface and his relationships with others only reveal so much. I think many actors would have overdone it with this character to compensate but he delivers a very subtle and effective performance. The movie as a whole does a good job with his solitary yet antagonistic relationship with the world. I haven't read the book which the movies is based on but it's obvious there were major changes since some parts seem a bit extraneous as told in the film. Also, the supporting characters are seen only through Henry's eyes and they are intentionally not fully fleshed out so I would have preferred unknown actors in most of those roles. It's disappointing to watch Marisa Tomei in a role that just kind of lays there. Still, a very good film overall.

It's one of those films that I know in my head are very very good, but I found it very boring to sit through. Still I thought Matt Dillon gave a very intelligent performance and as i've said many a time, i don't know how he's not more famous. HE should have been CTC and Gibson proportions all these years. I tend to know of many films that I haven't seen, even the indie ones, so i was surprised that when my bf brought it over, i hadn't even heard a whisper of it. Despite the fcat that it wasn't my cup of tea at all, having watched it i'm surprised that it hasn't done much better. Memento for instance wasn't a film i enjoyed (again though in my head i knew what a good film it was) but it was a massive 'cool' hit, and i'm disappointed for Matt Dillon's sake that this film didn't have a similar impact.
