I'm basically just starting this thread because I'm curious about whether anyone at all is actually planning on seeing this when it opens this week. It got absolutely savaged at Toronto, is currently sitting at 11% Fresh at RottenTomatoes.com, and looks to be a complete waste of a pretty damn awesome, not to mention pretty damn expensive, cast. And to think people were predicting it to win the BP Oscar this year.

Wasn't it supposed to be released to win the BP Oscar last year? And why would you think you had a genuine shot with a remake of a film that had already won Best Picture?

The short answer to your question is I do not pla n to see this one. I have seen the trailer and it doesn't look that great.
I don't know about it's Oscar chances. If you asked me last year if I thought what Crash's chances were I would have said it could find itself a contender, maybe be lucky enough to be short-listed and nominated but I wouldn't have thought it would have been chosen as the Winning Best Picture.
I don't know the history of this film. Just know it doesn't appeal enough to me to entice me to the theatre.

The only reasons I might have seen this are Kate Winslet and Mark Ruffalo. Thank God Kate has some other (more promising looking) films coming out. Also, I'm not sure if I could really stomach Anthony Hopkins, Jude Law and Sean Penn all in one movie. I'm surprised the set didn't explode from all that ego.

I bet Sean Penn is just now finishing picking all that scenery out of his teeth.

I'm really interested in seeing the original now. I wonder how much they screwed with it to have the remake be so poorly received. I might check it out for Patricia Clarkson but I agree about Sean Penn in the trailer - ugh.

Funny you should mention Penn's looks -- my ex sat beside him in the waiting room at LAX and said that he's remarkably good-looking, far better than ever gets translated onscreen. (Friendly and nonassholey, too; I'm not much of a fan and don't really have any strong feelings about him). I hafta admit... the trailer really appeals to me. But... there's no way I'll see it in the theatre, what with the bad reviews and Anthony "Paycheque" Hopkins.

Yeah, this movie looks crappy-- I think it probably takes itself WAY too seriously. But, honestly, if Kate Winslet doesn't win an Oscar this year for SOMETHING, I will steal Gwenny's and give it to her.

I can't remember where I read this but one critic felt the movie was horribly miscast.
He/she said the movie would've worked if James Gandolfini played the Willie Stark (Sean Penn) role and Penn played the Jude Law role.
