I don't know about Sean Penn. I think he's pretty good in a scene chewing sort of way. I enjoyed him in 21 grams and Mystic River. This however? From the trailer it doesn't look good. I'm going to skip this one and wait to watch my Sean chew his way through a different movie.

I see I am in the minority, but I am Sean Penn's bitch and so am actually looking forward to this. I am also a fan of the writer/director, so that's another reason to go, but the very troubled production/post production history does not bode well.

I like Sean Penn; I thought he was amazing in "Carlito's Way."
I thought the trailer for this looked good, I wouldn't mind seeing it.
I wonder why there seem to be so many period films, lately. "Hollywoodland," "Black Dahlia," "King's Men"...

Sean's hairstyle in this looks a lot like his I Am Sam look so when I see him screaming and raging in the commercials, I think some retarded person is up giving a speech to the people. Yeah, I'm going to hell.

I read the novel and saw the original movie and no way but no way do I see Sean Penn being right for that role. Willie Stark is a charming despot with a larger-than-life personality. I can see Penn doing the scheming but not the back-slapping man of the people bit. He just looks like 120 pounds of coiled evil onscreen and I don't see how voters wouldn't be scared to death.
atreides, if you're going to hell, make room in that handbasket because I thought the exact same thing.

hmm, I'm not Penn's biggest fan but I do think he can do ruthless and despotic pretty well... he has the perfect face to do it and he's a very good actor but.. but that's not enough to make me shell $10 bucks to see it.
I have a question though. I haven't read the book and I haven't seen the original movie, but,was it neccessary to hire 3 British actors if the story was set in the South? I know they are good actors (don't care for Jude) and can do accents pretty well (not Jude), but why take the chance? I apologize if any of the characters is British and I was just talking out of my ass. ;D

I've said it before and I'll say it again - Hollywood needs to stop remaking movies I've already seen. Most of them just don't work the second time around. Next thing you know, they remake "Casablanca" with Ashton Kutcher, Hilary Duff, and Eriq LaSalle.
This movie has so many pretentious asshats in it (Sean Penn, Jude Law, Anthony Hopkins, etc, etc) - there's no way I'd watch it, even with the loverly Kate Winslet in it. The preview looks bad - "Gigli" bad.

Supposedly, there's a belief in Hollywood that Brits can nail Southern accents. In my movie-watching experience, the accents range from the hideous (Albert Finney and Ewan McGregeor in "Big Fish") to the passable (Maggie Smith does okay), but none are good enough to warrant the reputation. I would have loved to have seen Billy Bob Thornton in any role in this movie. He does a great job with sleazy ("Primary Colors") and ATKM is a brilliant study of sleaze. I hate remakes. I think it was the late, great Gene SIskel who said that only bad movies, movies that had a good concept but poor execution, should be remade.

I've heard it before, too. I think it has something to do with the somewhat lilting quality of both a British and a Southern Belle accent.
