Just saw this last night. We read the book in one of my seminars (U.S. Infantry in WWII). I thought it was very well done - rather heavy-handed, but so was the book, and I much preferred it to Saving Private Ryan. I wish they could've fleshed out the three soldiers who died (should that be spoilered?), but I think the audience gets a pretty good idea of what kind of men they were from the scenes on Iwo, and the movie didn't provide too much back story on Bradley or Gagnon, either.
I thought Bradley (Phillippe) got the best writing and poor Ira Hayes (Beach) the worst - but Adam Beach still acted the hell out of his scenes.
I was glad for the inclusion of Hank Hansen and Iggy.
Then, of course, there was Neal McDonough as Captain Severance - I hope he doesn't mind being typecast as brash junior officers of the Second World War, because he certainly does an excellent job of it.
I also thought the combat scenes were very good, and was not surprised to see Spielberg had produced it.
Question: Tom Verica's name is in the credits, but I can't for the life of me remember his scenes. Where was he?
