I think Nicole takes the high road on anything Tom Cruise or $cientology related BECAUSE she knows the power they wield . It's a cult and it's a mean vindictive cult. I think she's afraid that her child will be alienated ( no pun intended ) from her more than they are presently . I think she's also afraid of the turmoil that $cientologi$ts can bring into her calm serene life. ( lawsuits , surveillance etc )
Look at all the people's lives that $cientology has ruined in the past , they are like a little army of persistant drones worker bees. Can you imagine the assault they would lay on her if she open her mouth about what goes on ? ( and you know she was priveledged to that secret info because she was the Head Clam's girl . )
They surveil people , they harass people , the make life miserable for people that have turned on them . I don't blame her for keeping her nose clean , she doesn't want to be in court with TinyThom or followed by his minion clams.
I believe they leave her alone as long as she tows the party line and doesn't open her mouth . Which I believe she is doing .
I think she loved and loves those kids. JMHO.

People may disagree with this sentiment, but she and Keith were married in the Catholic church and the same sentiment - that the relationship should be primary and the foundation for all other relationships, including children - was discussed when my husband and I were going through our marriage prep. It isn't meant to imply that children are unimportant or unloved.

I agree that Nicole has probably accepted that her kids are going to be $cieno freaks and there's nothing she can do about it. Frankly, she probably only has a few more years with them before they cut her off for being a suppressive. They're young enough now that they probably don't care that much about their so-called religion, but when they get older they'll be more brainwashed and will probably cut ties with Nicole, or else hassle her all the time about joining the clams and keep telling her that her family is evil because her father was a psychiatrist.
I find her whiny and I find it annoying that she's still getting work after all her flops, but I feel sorry for her when it comes to her kids and the clams. Yes, she probably signed a contract saying the kids would be raised as scienos but back then nobody really knew that much about scientology and how warped it is. (We do know now, so Katie Holmes has no such excuse.)

I think my problem with Nicole is not that she's in so many flops, but just that she's in so many movies period. She's always talking about how she'll slow down and not make so many movies, how important her family etc. are to her, but then she signs on to like 3 more films that year. She's rich, she's snagged her Oscar, she's respected... I guess I feel like if I were in her position I'd be wanting to rest on my laurels a bit more and spending time with my children before they move on to their own lives. She could make one movie a year and have half the year off to spend time with her hubby, kids, and pet charities. Maybe she means to do it and then a gem of a script comes along, but I don't really buy that either when a Bewitched remake comes along, ya know? Slow down Nic, before your life passes you by.

I'm surprised Nicole did the movie at all seeing as how she's taken a renewed interest in Catholicism recently and the books are supposed to be extremely anti-Catholic and anti-Catholic Church.
I can understand why some (or a lot?) of Catholics aren't going to consider it great viewing pleasure to see their religion attacked for two hours, and why organizations like The Catholic League want to spread the word as to what the movie is about to people who might go to the theater thinking it's just a nice fantasy movie and not know the subtext.

I think that is what is going on too. She pretty much said, "Screw this wacky Scientology crap, I'm going to stay a Catholic" while still married to Tom. I'm sure that didn't sit well when the wife of one of the church's most visible members walked away from the church because she didn't like it (and I wouldn't at all be surprised if that played a part in Tom's decision to divorce her).
So I'm with those who think that she is under the threat of becoming labeled a Supressive Person and cut off from her children forever. So she keeps her mouth shut (for the most part - saying things like "The kids are being raised as Scientologists. I don't want to discuss it" is as close as she'll get to voicing her dislike for the church) and plays along.
And again, Scientology is a terrible, dangerous cult -- for everyone except their celebrity members. They are treated like royalty, which is why they have places like the Celebrity Centre where celebs can get special treatment (and what other "church" has special centers for their celebrity members? No "we're all equal in the eyes of God" type stuff going on here. In Scientology, celebs are definitely better than you). Isabella and Conner are probably completely safe and treated well by the clams. They will only run into trouble if later in life they either need psychiatic care and the clams won't let them get it, or they want to leave the church. Until that happens, they are the little clam prince and princess of Scientology and Nicole has no tangible reason beyond "I don't like Scientology" to kick up a fuss.
And also remember that the childrens' father is a Scientologist too. If she starts to kick up a fuss, he could start a really nasty custody battle. He's got an army of lawyers who have plenty of practice in suing the pants off of everyone and the clams (who would obviously back Tom) are known to be especially vicious in this area. Nicole probably just doesn't want to go there, because she will lose.

I've read the religious themes have been majorly watered down in The Golden Compass to make it more accessible. So it might be just a nice fantasy movie now. Of course, I don't know for sure since I haven't seen it.

I got that feeling as well. I'm hoping Nic's kids are absorbing enough of their mom's relatively sane influence and and haven't bought into Tom's idiocy and are just humoring their dad.

I think she would take Tom back even now. A bottle of wine and asking for forgiveness, and Tom could have her back. Yup

I have a reeeeaaaallllly strong feeling that the $cienos have some sort of super horribly bad dirt on Nicole. Don't new converts have to admit all sorts of terrible things from their past?
Although, I can't imagine what skeletons in someone's closet could be so bad that one would let their kids be absorbed into that nuthouse.
