I really love the way the dwarves look: way less makeup than Gimli, and they all have very different looks. Hot dwarves? Who would have thunk it? I remember the stories about how the dwarf makeup made the skin peel off the face of John Rhys Davies, so that there were days when he couldn't shoot and had to wait for his skin to heal, and somehow they only discovered the extent of the problem after it was too late to change Gimli's look. I imagine finding better dwarf makeup was one of the first things they thought about this time around. Thorin and Kili look like the obvious Aragorn and Legolas types. Overall it's great that they've obviously tried to make even the less hot dwarves memorable and suggest something about their personalities (one dwarf looks bookish, another's a merry miner type, etc).

and it's that attention to detail and character development that I appreciate as a viewer.

Exactly. It's obvious that Peter Jackson loves this subject matter, and that he's gotten the crew and cast involved in that as well. That's why I love the LOTR triology (though I do mock the Frodo/Sam relationship), and why I'm truly excited for these movies.

It's official. The Hobbit will become a trilogy.[/color] I'll be honest, while I do absolutely love the LOTR trilogy, I'm not exactly overjoyed by this news. Simply because PJ has added a lot of the appendices into the main story of The Hobbit. A little book I loved just as much. But heck, who am I kidding, I'll still go and watch all of them.

I haven't read the book but wasn't there some concern that there wasn't enough story to make it into two movies? How are they going to stretch it into three? Are they going to shoot new footage?

I am worried because I'm starting to wonder if PJ & co are fiddling to much with the source material... but I hope I'm wrong. Major changes were made in the LOTR movies from the books, but I loved them anyway (and I LOVE the books big time). However, some of the tampering in the LOTR movies was not successful imo (the omission of Saruman's death in the theatrical release, the rewrite of Merry and Pippin's time with the ents, Faramir having Gollum beaten up, for example). So... cautiously worried and optimistic at the same time? Anyone think a 6 movie adaptation of Silmarillion is next?

Yes, that is/was the main concern of most fans. PJ 'solved' it by diving into the appendices of LOTR. And perhaps even adding some of what was cut from LOTR. The reason is because the right to The Hobbit and LOTR, including the appendices, are in the hands of the studio. Considering that the Tolkien Estate do not look kindly on the movies, this will probably be their only chance to really delve into the stories. The likelihood the estate will sell the rights of Tolkien's other works are pretty much nonexistent at this moment. Yeah, that pretty much sums it up for me.

Also watch for The Chronicles Of Tom Bombadil and Gollum : The Early Years. I love the LOTR books ( minus the songs, the endless, endless songs ) and I love the Hobbit but even with all my enthusiasm back when I was in my late teens I couldn't get through The Silmarillion. I tried and tried but at one point my brain rebelled and wouldn't let me continue. It was the epitome of the word Slog

This quote from PJ's press release is telling imo:
The rise of the necromancer and the battle of Dol Guldur are mentioned in The Hobbit, but not actually part of the story very much. Also, we hear about the Dwarves of Erebor, but they're mentioned rather than part of the story. If they go in depth for all that, I can definitely see 3 movies happening. I'm just slightly worried about how they will treat this source material. There are some reports from that long trailer that aired that seem to indicate some changes in the background story about Gandalf's sword and some stuff about the witch king... I really hope they stick to Tolkien's story even if they make the movies more than a chapter by chapter re-telling for The Hobbit.
