Just saw it today and was just underwhelmed. Perhaps I am over the whole fantasy movie craze. It was just too long.

I didn't love it or hate it, but one thing the film made me realize is that Bilbo is a much better character then Frodo.

I still haven't seen part one, and the trailer for part two is out. The effects still look extremely cheesy to me. Almost like cartoons. And Dany's dragons on Game of Thrones look better (and more realistic) than Smaug. WTF is wrong with Legolas' eyes? Did they change the color to blue?

Yeah, the effects were better in the LotR trilogy was made more than ten years ago so I hope they're still working on it until the release.

Orlando wore blue coloured contacts first time around, I think this time as well, but they probably enhanced it with CGI to make it pop more. He does look...odd.
I have to say, the love for this overdrawn trilogy has diminished quite considerably.

Jackson made this about a decade too late.

I have to say, the love for this overdrawn trilogy has diminished quite considerably. Sadly, that's also my view. I loved the LOTR books and adored the movies. They were made with love and care towards the books. We watch them over and over again, including the 'behind the scenes' DVDs. What I got from the first Hobbit movie was 'Let's wring this franchise out for all it's worth and make all the dollars we can.' Massively underwhelmed and so disappointed. Ignoring the rest of the things I didn't like, they could have cut a good half-hour out of that movie and lost nothing. It was all-too-obviously bloated out to try to justify three movies.

Ditto ladyjane, loved the books , movies, spent hours at theonering.com, now can't stand to watch them. When I watch Return of the King now all I can think is that this won Best Picture?

Yup, that's me too in a nutshell. And I really loved The Hobbit when I read it as a teen, but when they announced initially for a two-parter I already thought they were stretching it. So when they basically said "Nope! Gotcha! It's going to be a trilogy!" I was pretty much in disbelief. And Pt.1 pretty much solidifies it, for it is too long, the pacing is just not right and drags, and you can tell some scenes were put in simply to give the movie more minutes. A total shame, for with the right treatment it could have been great. Still, I'll probably go see it, but in the regular 2D when available.

Yep, I'll definitely wait a few weeks after its opening weekend when I'll see this. I am in no big rush. It is kinda neat how everyone who plays an elf becomes so much better-looking when they're in the full elf regalia. Lee Pace is an okay looking guy in real life but holy shit, he's so pretty as an elf!
And I too am confused how the special effects got worse than the original trilogy from over a decade ago. They look so cartoony now.
