Yeah, I REALLY hope that they are still working on the FX because they really do look super-fake and in 2013, that just isn't acceptable.
I am enjoying Lee Pace as an elf, though.

There was just so much newness in the first go round: Sean Astin? He's in movies again? And who's this new hottie Orlando Bloom? Hey, there's that guy from The Matrix! They finally found a part Elijah Wood was born to play! And the CGI at the time was awesome; I remember being on FameTracker and people losing their sh*t when Legolas leapt on a horse backwards. I read the books because of the movies, have the boxed set, the whole nine.
This just...isn't that. And that dragon, I'm hoping for diehard fans, is a placeholder.

And I too am confused how the special effects got worse than the original trilogy from over a decade ago. They look so cartoony now. I wondered at the time if the poor special effects had anything to do with the fact that Jackson shot the movie in 48 frames per second 3D as opposed to 24 fps. I saw the 2D version and wondered if 'winding it back' (so to speak) meant it lost something. I'm not a fan of 3D. I gather a lot of people who saw the 48fps 3D didn't like the format at all either. IIRC, some critics at the time said the 48fps 3D movie was more video-game quality than cinema quality. If that was the case, then it surely wouldn't translate well to 2D in slower speed. Just an idea. Otherwise I just can't work out how the special effects/cgi could be so much worse now than they were 10 years ago.

I saw the trailer today. The CGI is just a bit much for me. ladyjane, I think you might be right about the FPS. I just know I won't be seeing this one in 3D, it was a waste of money for The Hobbit.

My first viewing was in HFR and it really did not improve the viewing experience one bit. It looks absolutely breathtaking when they show panorama shots of the NZ landscape, more due to the fact that is real. The rest? OMG, the HFR made everything so obviously fake. I know it's fake, we all know it's fake. It's just a movie, a totally made up, non-existent world. I know pretty much 90% on screen is fake, but the overload and clarity of detail made it very hard for me to suspend disbelief. I can see where the make up is applied, where the prosthetics are, spot the CGI a mile away, and it really distracted me. It took me right out every. single. time.
I saw it again in 2D and it wasn't as distracting, and I ended up enjoying the movie much, much more. I'm sure HFR is a great improvement for certain movies, I just don't think it's best suitable for the fantasy genre. Not until CGI has improved so much where all effects are seamless and fits in perfectly.

Why, oh why must they put in Evangeline Lilly as a Mary Sue elf to allegedly try and attract a female audience? I knew there wasn't a romance in the book and didn't care- this isn't about a love story, it's an adventure. Shockingly, I can identify with Bilbo just fine. I don't need pandering to by a lousy actress.

Desolation of Smaug trailer has been released. Smaug will be the main reason why I'll be seeing it, despite the presence of Richard Armitage. Or to be exact Benedict Cumberbatch's voice. Yes, very well chosen.

Damn. What a voice. I'll be paying my $10 just to hear Smaug.

Yes, very well chosen. Yeah, that's pretty much what is going to get me to buy a ticket. I've always liked BC's voice, but put it through that dragon filter and I'm like Daaaaaaaaaaaaamn. I'll be there with bells on. I'll also be there because Lee Pace is pretty. But mostly for the dragon voice.

Re: Tauriel. She could be either an awesome female character or a massive trainwreck of a Mary Sue. I'm really hoping it's the former, but the fact that she's played by Evangeline "So Beautiful It's a Curse" Lily doesn't make me very confident. As it stands, the fans are already eating Tauriel alive, so she'd have to be absolutely spectacular considering a) she wasn't in the books and b) she gets more screen time than Legolas. I really, really hope they didn't shove her in there to make her a love interest for Legolas because they see how many fangirls Leggy has and hey, chicks love romance, right? I give Peter Jackson more credit than that, but not a studio exec with dollar signs in his eyes and no idea about how real, live people think.
