I thought Aragorn was Legolas' true love anyway. Now there was some chemistry!

Re: Tauriel. She could be either an awesome female character or a massive trainwreck of a Mary Sue. I'm really hoping it's the former, but the fact that she's played by Evangeline "So Beautiful It's a Curse" Lily doesn't make me very confident. As it stands, the fans are already eating Tauriel alive, so she'd have to be absolutely spectacular considering a) she wasn't in the books and b) she gets more screen time than Legolas. I really, really hope they didn't shove her in there to make her a love interest for Legolas because they see how many fangirls Leggy has and hey, chicks love romance, right? I give Peter Jackson more credit than that, but not a studio exec with dollar signs in his eyes and no idea about how real, live people think. I have no idea what the original source is, but when this has come up in threads about the new trailer there have been comments that Jackson reportedly said that Tauriel isn't Legolas' love interest. If he said that, he could still have changed his mind at some point (Arwen was originally going to be at Helm's Deep instead of Haldir but that plot was changed after Liv Tyler did some filming). Or it could be a small thing: he's into her but she's not into him, and his brotherly or at least not overly lovelorn affection is used as the reason why Legolas takes a more active role in the fight. I hope there isn't a love story and that Tauriel is there as an example of a less isolationist/anti-dwarf wood elf, because the lack of female characters really shows that The Hobbit is from a different era. Even LOTR had Eowyn and Galadriel, and Arwen as someone whose role could plausibly be made more prominent in the movies than it was in the books. So I approve of Tauriel in theory if she ends up being like Mako in Pacific Rim: pretty much the only woman, unfortunately, but at least she wasn't defined by a love story with a hot male lead.

This. If they're going to insert a female canon foreigner in there, have her actually do something. Far too often there are female characters who, if they were completely removed from the story, would have no impact on the plot because they were only there as a love interest. This has gotten better over the years, but we're not there yet. From what I've read about the character, she could go either way, so I've got my fingers crossed that the writers didn't fumble the ball.
On the other hand, the petty side of me kind of wants just a nip of UST between Legolas and Tauriel, because you know that will bring out the shippers. And watching the Legolas/Aragorn shippers and the Legolas/Tauriel shippers go to war with each other would be pretty hilarious.

Saw an early afternoon showing today, despite it got released on Wednesday here. A long sit. Again. But a definite improvement to part 1 AUJ in my opinion. It doesn't stall as much, though there are a few scenes that last too long. Tauriel wasn't as bad as I had feared, though I could have lived without the alluded romance factor. No Hollywood, if you had just left her as a kick ass Elf warrior I really would have no problem with her. But you just had to throw in romance into the mix. Spoiler
I mean a possible love triangle Legolas-Tauriel-Kili? Really? Ugh. Prt 1 felt so sloow, while weirdly enough DOS feels more rushed. Oh yes, Smaug. Bloody fantastic. A bit too talkative perhaps, but he was awesome. And Benedict Cumberbatch...yes, very well cast for his voice. The cliffhanger was a bit meh though.

I saw The Hobbit yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed it. So much more than the first one. I think my favorite part though was Stephen Colbert's cameo in Laketown. I actually let out an "OMG" squee! I didn't mind Tauriel, but Legolas seemed a bit off. Maybe the eyes? I don't know. And Smaug was worth the wait. Loved him. The WETA team (and Benedict) did a fantastic job bringing him to life.
I do have to say I was surprised by how little of Bilbo there actually was in the film, though maybe that was just me. I felt this one was much more about the dwarves.
