If you really want to warp your head, type "L Ron Hubbard" and "Jack Parsons" into Google. When you are doing things that freak out the one and only Aliester Crowley, you should take that as a big sign...

(God rest her soul, I loved that nun!)
Guinastasia -- Maybe it's because it's a Friday afternoon and I can feel the weekend coming on, but... For some reason that made me literally give a little yelp of laughter! There's probably more sincerity in that one parenthetical aside than in all Hubbard's sci-fi/religious writings put together!

That there is. Sister Frances was the sweetest, greatest elementary school teacher I ever had. It's all true-she never laid a finger on us, but she never had to-knowing that you let her down when you misbehaved was punishment enough.
Plus, first grade was when I was first diagnosed ADHD and she really helped me get through it, and I was her pet. I still have a little doll she gave me at the end of the year.

See, Guinastasia, you were in a diocese run by dedicated, competent people. Whereas my parish (Washington DC area) was obviously where the RCC dumped all of their crazy folks. I always figured that the reason why my great uncle (Holy Ghost Father) was never in the DC area was because he had a sense of humor.

I'm surprised the clams haven't been able to recruit more A-List women. Other than Hilary Swank, everyone else seems to be TV actresses.

I could only find one mention of her being involved (I forgot to save the url). If she's in, she's shocking low profile for how they operate.

I haven't been able to find anything that says she's in so I hope it's not true. I like her and don't want her to be a clam. As for having more successful men than women, maybe they put more emphasis on men and hold them to a higher standard. If they think men are better than women for whatever reason, they might make more of an effort to court the powerful males and less of an effort to convert the powerful females.

I always figured that the reason why my great uncle (Holy Ghost Father) was never in the DC area was because he had a sense of humor. Oh, we still had some crazies, I'll tell you what. My sister's confirmation teacher, Fr. John*, once told them that if you don't leave your Christmas tree up until a certain date, it was a sin. Oh, and then there was the pastor who was embezzeling church funds with his secretary, going on huge trips to Atlantic City to gamble and blaming it all on a church employee who had a brain tumor. He eventually confessed-on his own death bed. I also had a Fr. John teach us confirmation, but he was younger, liked the same music we did, and used to shoot hoops with us.

Hilary Swank? No! I actually like her and like to think she would know better than that. I hope it is just one of those situations where she just went to a Scientology center to check it out, then didn't go back. It seems a lot of people have done that.
As far as the celebs that are in Scientology - if you take a look, there is a pattern. They are either C-List celebs, were "raised" in the church (like Beck), or they are young. The only exceptions to this rule are Tom Cruise and John Travolta.
To be an A-Lister in Hollywood you have to have talent, or at least a certain "something" that the public finds appealing (think Julia Roberts). In addition to that, you have to be smart, determined, and you have to surround yourself with smart people. I can't think of an A-Lister that I believe to be genuinely stupid (aside from Tom Cruise, but he's in a different catagory that I'll get to in a minute). These people are generally smart and very focused, and they don't need the BS that Scientology serves up to solve their problems and explain away their neuroses. It is all bullshit and most of these people can tell.
In my mind, there are two kinds of people in Hollywood. Those who love to act and are good at it, and those who want to be famous. Most C-listers fall into the latter category. They have stars in their eyes and dream of seeing their names in lights. These people are a bit blinded by their dreams, don't quite have the talent they think they have, but lap up all the attention that the little bit of talent gets them. These folks are not-that-bright, naive, and desperate for anything that will make them better and get them ahead. That is why Scientology is loaded with these people.
Young people in general are trying to find themselves. Think about your basic college campus and all the stuff kids do there. This is why religious cults are somewhat common on college campuses (I had my own run-in with one in college when my roommate got sucked into one - I and another gal managed to talk her into walking away, and it wasn't easy), these people are easy targets and easy to win over. Scientology can tap right into that. That's why a lot of "young" Hollywood is involved with them. Some will grow out of it, others won't. If you look down the lists of celebs who have been involved with the clams, you see that a lot of them were involved when they were young, then grew up, realized it was a con, and left.
The ones who don't fit into these categories are Travolta and Cruise. However, if certain rumors are to be believed, then they both have a secret they are deeply ashamed of, would hate for anyone to find out, and would desperate cling to anyone who says they can help them with this "problem." This could explain why they are in Scientology.

IIRC, Travolta actually got into the cult in the 70s, right around the time he was doing Saturday Night Fever.
