That would stop me from becoming a scientologist right there. If I told someone my deep dark secrets and they blabbed I could just say they were lying. But for them to be able to pull out a tape? And Im not a celebrity nor are my secrets that deep and dark.

Thanks for the petition, mardigras! Hopefully it will open some eyes in Washington, especially when coupled with Tom Cruise's batshit crazy behavior of late.
Perhaps a little O/T but I'll ask anyway: does anyone know why the $cientology logo is a cross with what looks like a sunburst in the middle? Is it a blatant attempt to appear religious in nature (ROTFL!) or is there some deeper iconographic meaning to it? Just curious.

Regarding the $cieno logo - when you're trying to pass yourself off as a religion for tax purposes, you'd damn straight better look like one.

quickychick: well, according to info on the Operation Clambake site , scientology members are given a CD which "helps" them surf the web, and make their own Co$ webpages. Included in the software is a web-surfing filter which censors them from accessing any site critical to Scientology. So, if you post anything about the Co$ on a site, they can't see it. SO, Co$ members would never be able to find any of the sites criticizing their religion, because their religion doesn't allow it!

It occurred to me the last time I saw a picture of CTC in front of a Co$ podium that it's basically an X'ed out cross, which kind of makes sense given the previous postings here about LRon's links to satanism. I don't think I've ever seen anything about a cross being significant in their "religion", unlike Christianity where it's kind of pivotal to the whole storyline. :-)
I'd say that CTC is a horrible ad for the Co$ with his ridiculous behavior and comments (crazy plus short on details, and accompanied by his take-my-word-for-it,-it's-way-over-your-heads arrogance), but I know that there are people out there whose lives are desperate enough to fall for it.

Yeah, that's what I was having a hard time understanding...I couldn't tell whether the $ceinos were trying to co-opt the cross or eradicate it with an X. Either way, they freak me out. I've come across a few of them, peddling their books or personality tests on the street and I just tell them to get the fuck away from me. I'm not even nice about it. I see no reason to be.

I have become obsessed lately with reading all that I can about this crazy clam cult. Not to sound "glib" but I simply just don't get it. What exactly is their agenda? I mean OK so they believe some crazy alien Xenu blew up the universe billions of years ago and little pieces of evil alien soul now inhabit each anf every one of our bodies and thru the auditing process we are ridding ourself of these evil little beings? Hmmm OK then. I mean My God I have done some serious reading up on this and that is the best I can come up with. What are their beliefs on moral issues that most religions take a stand on. Drinking? Smoking? Premarital Sex? Abortion? Politics? What's with the Sea Org? What is it's purpose? Is it some sort of puesdo Navy? Aside from their hatred of psychiatry and psych meds I have no idea what their beliefs are on anything. Aside from auditing what goes on at the Scientology Centers? Do they have Sunday services? What do they talk about at them? Aliens? The more I read up on it the less I know. Other than it is most definetly a cult. It's so truly mystifying to me. Can you imagine if a bunch of celebrities had joined the Branch Davidians and went around singing it's praises? I mean what's the difference really? You're all smart folks. I know someone will be able to shed a little light for me.

I think one of the reasons it's difficult to distinguish the sort of defining principles of Scientology is that it wasn't really designed to be a true religion. It was designed to make money. L. Ron came up with a bunch of crap and managed to pass it off as a self help religion/philosophy, but if you're a thinking person, you soon realize that there's not a lot behind it.
I don't know about Scientology's political stands, but I've read that they're supposed to be against smoking and drinking because those are mind-altering drugs. But, I watched one episode of Fat Actress and Alley was smoking in it (I think -- I seem to remember that). Maybe she was being a bad clam.

They also regularly prescribe abortions for any knocked-up clam, especially those in the Sea Org. I don't know the official rationale for this but frankly I'm just grateful for anything that contributes to $cieno population control.

Considering how Sea Org are reputed to treat the kids that are born, I'm amazed Social Services haven't swept in there and done something. Or does it only count as child abuse if it's not done in the name of religion??
