I thought Kelly Preston was belly-aching about Ritilin long before Napoleon Clamaparte spouted his crap about baby blues and the famous snake oil vitamin cure.

Wait a minute! Kirstie Ally and Kelly Preston are actually saying that instead of marijuana, cocaine, methamphetamines, and ecstacy, kids are popping ANTIDEPRESSANTS? I mean, prescription drugs, yeah, they are abused - but more cold pills, pain killers, sleep aids. If they really think that the drug of choice of teenagers is Prozac and the like, they need to contact the National Institute of Drug Abuse - because NIDA doesn't know about this.

I don't think Prozac and Paxil are being used recreationally, but Ritalin sure is. It's a stimulant, so kids who don't have ADHD are using it like speed.
Of course, that doesn't mean that all Ritalin is bad-any drug can be abused. Kids are huffing Pam Cooking Spray, for crissakes. I remember during art class in high school all the stoner slackers pinching the rubber cement. (They'd pour a little on a piece of notebook paper). God knows why anyone would want to get high off of that shit, though, that stuff REEKS.

Oh Christ, suddenly some of Mission Earth really becomes clear. Yuck!
And as for Kelly "No Career" Preston and those other Clam Deflectors, I would go into how they're wrong but since that distracts from the fact that any drug can be abused and that comparing them to illegal drugs is a pretty big leap in logic. The Clams' big beef with drugs stems from their own mistrust in psychology, so what they're saying with 'all drugs are bad, follow our vitamin trail' is that the reason drugs are bad is because they're being taken against the prescription instructions? Or rather, they mistrust psychology because the drugs that are prescribed are not being used according to psychology? Huh?

The quote was specifically referring to anti-depressants. Not really a drug of choice for abusers, because if you take twice what you should, you'll more likely to get nauseous than high.
Ritalin is abused, sure. It's also a scheduled drug, pretty tightly controlled. You can't get more than a month's worth at a time, doctors cannot write it to be refillable - you need a new prescription each time, and have to sign for it. Kids abuse cold pills more than Ritalin - and cold pills like sudafed are cooked down to make methamphetamine. But you can still buy 20 kinds of decongestants at any drug store. prescription pain killers are abused - but you can still get vicodin from a doctor.
The idea that we need to stop prescribing medications to kids because of the fear of abuse is illogical.
People mentioned kids "huffing" inhalants to get high. I know a teen who now has brain damage, with learning disability and a lowered IQ from aerosol cans. Yeah, Glade air freshener causes learning problems - take it off the market.

Thanks, girlfriday and Guin. I didn't think they had but I knew that one of the anti-Clam sites had been taken over. At least now I can buy the stuff I want without wondering if I'm supporting the Clams!
At the end of the day, any substance can be abused. It doesn't mean that it should be withdrawn though.

Oh for godsakes, who the hell takes an ANTI-DEPRESSANT to get high? I've never heard of such a thing. Stupid goddamn clams. Kirstie must have injected that coke right into her cerebral cortex to be THAT fucking stupid.

I think the Clams are betting on the tendency in popular culture to presume that anti-depressants are just Valium 2.0. Ever since the late 1980s , anything bland and mellowed out is usually described as "(fill in the blank) on Prozac".

Considering that her career after Cheers has had a high point of the "Look Who's Converting Into A Clam" and "Veronica's Clam Closet" and some funky ads for Pier 1, I think she probably didn't get off the drugs as much just lie about it.
