How about those live journals where people pretend to be the celebrity? Scary.

With regards to the faking illness phenomenon, the radio show This American Life has a show that focused on a group of hardcore Rent fans, and one among their number that did the whole real live fake illness drama. You can listen to it here, it's Act Three of the show.

Oh, for god's sake, that is sick. First of all, because...AHGHGH! Delusional! Do I even need a second of all?! I think not. But if I did--Rent? I like it as much as the next person, but: come on.

I was in a fandom where someone had pulled this. Her attention-getting escalated to the stage where she registered 600 (I'm not joking) IDs with Yahoo in order to join one club, then claimed that 6 of the members were killed in the Twin Towers.
She was exposed when all the active members of the 600 were proven to be posting from one computer in her home state (the IP numbers proved it). No mean feat considering the members were supposed to be in Norway, Germany, Ireland and various scattered states in the US.

I often lurk/post on the IMDB boards (different username) and there are some scary people there, plus most threads end up being US vs UK screaming matches.
I once, along with several other people, had a long series of arguements with a poster who insisted he knew a celeb personaly and that she was a real bitch in real life. After a while his stories started to conflict and some questions I asked him, that he should have known, he couldn't answer.
I do sometimes wonder if the IMDB themselves post wildly provocative and abusive posts just to keep things lively.

I'd buy that. It's been a long time since I checked out any of the forums at IMDB.com, but I remember some of the crazy stuff you mention. Every once in a while, somone who appears a little more mature than the collection of posters s/he's antagonizing will materialize with inflamatory statements--that could be the staff messing around.
I also remember two times specifically when I really felt like entertainment "professionals" were interacting with the nutzoid fans on those boards. The first time was a couple of weeks after the release of Minority Report, when an IMDB.com poster or two complained about a couple of the arguably large plot holes in that movie and there was general agreement that they could mar enjoyment of the film as a whole--except for this one person, who showed up blathering film jargon, offering elaborate explanations for why those errors were there, pontificating on Spielberg's "intentions" with regard to those plot problems and basically acting like the others had kicked his pet puppy for pointing out the flaws. Finally, another poster asked, "Dude, what were you, one of the story consultants or something?" The mad person abruptly disappeared. The other incident occured around the time the third season of 24 was about to premier--I actually think it's obvious IMDB.com really likes 24 because they've closely monitored those forums since their inception. In September of 2003, someone posted the purported complete plot synopsis for the entire third season of the series. It was kinda cool, really--there were some wacky things set to go down in the last two episodes of Day Three, but other than that, I loved it. As I believe Moldy Tofu wanted all manner of t.v. spoilers kept off this site, I can't get into why I do think it was legitimate info, clearly being provided by a 24 staff insider. Needless to say, the other IMDB posters got all hyper over it, though, and hey, I can't blame them, it looked fun. Then, two days later, the spoiler-filled post was yanked down, as were any and all comments referencing that post for the rest of season three's run. And in the end, a lot of those spoilers did appear in the plots of aired episodes--basically everything that had been posted, save for the really wacky stuff. My pet theory is that someone wanted to probe the popularity of a proposed storyline on a semi-obscure forum to decrease the chances of getting caught for leaking script summaries. Yes, I know professionals do that all the time and it's not a huge deal, it just surprises me that it might have happened on IMDB. At first glance, that place appears entirely boring.

Thanks, MostlyHarmless.
Another annoying thing on the imdb.com message boards are the constant, "Are they gay?" threads.
A)What is wrong with being gay? B)Who cares about the sex lives of celebrities, whether they are gay or not? C)And these posts usually go on for like 100 replies.
One great feature on the imdb.com: The ignore button. If Yahoogroups had an ignore button, I'd be happy.

Trying to use spoiler tags here for anyone who hasn't watched 'Taking Lives'
And therefore he completly ruined 'Taking Lives', 5 minutes into watching the movie, I turned to my boyfriend and said : 'It's Ethan Hawk', he looked at me confused and asked 'How do you know?' and I said 'Well just look at him and his greasy hair and sleezy self, he just screams serial killer!' Well I was right . I wish he would go back to his old self he used to be so hot. Btw did anyone every watch 'Before sunset'? Is it worth watching, did he shower before filming began?
